1997 Martin Ray Cabernet Sauvignon Diamond Mountain - USA, California, Napa Valley, Diamond Mountain (12/15/2009) I opened this with some trepidations as I have heard that many 1997 California CS have started declning. Having two bottles in the cellar, I needed to find out. Beautiful deep red in color and the nose offered rich cedar, asian spices, coffee, and dark fruits. Outstanding ...

2001 Van Der Heyden Cabernet Sauvignon - USA, California, Napa Valley (12/10/2009) 13.9% alcohol. I remember tasting this at the winery back in 2005. It had some oak -- aged 46 months -- but was lush and pretty and refined all the way around. Well, down the line, here is what all that new American oak got you ... pickle juice. This is, without a doubt, the most confounding wine I've ever ...

Sitting here at my desk downing the last bit of coffee, I can't help but thinking: Are we not poised for the most exciting times ever to be a Cabernet drinker? With 2007 Napa on the horizon. The 2005s and 2006s still widely available. The 2002s and 2004s giving instant fruit-loving gratification, and the majestic 2001s still lingering around here and there, all while many prices keep coming ...

2006 J. Davies Cabernet Sauvignon - USA, California, Napa Valley, Diamond Mountain (12/11/2009) I've been a member of Schramsberg's club for years. In fact, it is the only wine club I belong to -- their quarterly shipments keep me in enough excellent sparkling wine to satisfy my needs and tastes. Every once in a while, they include a bottle of J. Davies still wine in the club shipment. I ...

2004 Punters Corner Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon (procork): Inky crimson/red colour, and there’s a fair amount of crusting on the bottle already. It’s hard not to compare this to Balnaves, as it’s tarry and full on with jammy blueberries, capsicum and cedar oak; the palate’s chewy with the same tarry/sweet blueberry jam characters, medium-weight though with just a lick of black olive on the ...

2006 Maybach Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Materium - USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville (12/12/2009) Tight upon opening. 1 hour of air and a 4 hour decant was perfect. Powerful wine with a huge nose of rich dark fruit that leads to black fruit with a mix of mineral and charcoal. This is a powerful wine that is framed with silky tannins and acidity to provide surprising balance ...

2002 Showket Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon - USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville (12/10/2009) Double decanted 3 hours early. From magnum. Medium dark ruby red color. Some age showing on the very edge. The nose has a very restrained quality. Some black cherries, some low level cassis, and black plums. The palate showed a very classy deft and pure wine of a medium weight, with some beautiful ...

1988 Dunn Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley - USA, California, Napa Valley (12/11/2009) Popped and poured into a decanter and then consumed over the next couple of hours. Color is showing some slight maturity with a bit of bricking on the edges. Nose shows some cedar, old leather and slightly spicy fruit. Surprising amount of acidity at first and not much in the way of tannins. ...

Popped for a taste and the let air for one hour and drank over 3 hours. Really lush thick wine with excellent dark fruit supported by just the right amount of wood and dust, and enough acidity to keep it from being too heavy. The finish had a slight mint note and what seemd like a small bit of nuttiness. This is drinking well now but has tons of life ahead of it.

There's no shortage of notes on this wine, but thought I'd chime in. It doesn't suck. By happenstance, I had this a year to the day since my last bottle. Despite the minor flaws, it was actually a bit better than the last. Not sure how it will age though given the appearance of VA (at least in this bottle). I'm down to a single bottle, so I guess it's time to get my first peek at the '06....

I loved the circus episode last year, I also loved ?The Critic in the Cabernet? last year, the second-to-the-last episode. This season, I like the Amish episode best so far, but who knows how it will come ...

Received as part of a "Crisis in Napa" case from Wine Access.... 2006 Maple Lane Cabernet Sauvignon , Napa Valley, alc 14.5%, $25...the nose is a bit sweet....on the palate...more serious dark fruit with a little wood sweetness underlying...really good texture and weight...the finish is one of building fruit intensity and less sweetness.... mild tannins....Very good at the $25 price range.... ...

NV Perrier Jouet Day two for this bottle, and shows a little sweetness, though nothing overbearing. Under $25 it's not a terrible buy, but you can do better. 1999 Mondavi Reserve Cabernet $50 special, so we wanted to see what was doing for a potential re-buy. Pop and pour, initally a little tannic and tight, as to be expected. However, this blossomed into quite a treat, with olives, tar, ...
