Hope you can help, this is driving me mad. Halfway through installing a clean install of Vista, the install failed (i suspect due to a problem with the DVD being dirty as there is a large smudge on it) The PC now won't boot from the hard drive, giving the error 'missing bootmgr. press ctrl+alt+del to reboot' I thought I would be able to boot from the Vista DVD, but the DVD drive ...

I've seen this similar problem posted before but none matched my specific issue. Got a free Dell Dimension 4700... replaced the HD with a new 80 gig, popped the Dell CD in the DVD drive and -- TADA. "No boot device available." I can get into BIOS and do all sorts of fun stuff. Rearrange the boot order, see that the BIOS identifies the HD (on SATA) and DVD (on IDE) both correctly. ...

In bios you need to treat the new hdd as ide, not sata. Ide or pata, if it does raid, disable that as well. Even though the drive is sata bios will not see the drive that way unless you are using a raid array.

No, it's a hardware (configuration) issue. Still waiting for root device means either there's no driver loaded for the drive controller or the BIOS settings are wrong (SATA not set to AHCI mode, doesn't apply in your case since you're using a PATA drive). for PATA devices you can try jumpering it as master and placing it at the end of the cable with no slave device connected.
