Hello, As part of my asset allocation, I need to contribute to a bond fund. I can contribute to USAIX (USAA income fund) in a 403b or PTTAX (Pimco total return fund) in a 457b. The USAA fund has an expense ratio of .65% and the Pimco fund, .90%. Neither has a load. Both contain bonds with simlar ratings. Even though the ER on the Pimco fund is higher, the 10 year return is significantly ...

Can someone explain to me the difference between PIMCO A,C,D Funds? They all have different expenses -some have front load others do not. How do you figure which one to purchase? My other question is below are returns comparing PIMCO D with Vanguard Total Bond Index. PIMCO returns are better but would the expenses negate the increase in returns? Thanks in advance PIMPCO Total ...

My morgan stanley rep. tells me I would be better off with a value manager and buying individual plain vanilla bonds in the same allocation as is represented in caibx. His argument is whatever the allocation with caibx between stocks and bonds would be cheaper with owning individual bonds, so you don't pay yearly the cost of carrying the bonds. That assumes that his value manager can preform ...

I was about to post a question on why bond funds generally have a long-term center around 10, figuring it's either really stupid or really complex. Upon reflection, I answered myself with the assumption that it's because the underlying asset is simply always sold and purchased at a standard price (adjusted for yield variations), rather than based on a complex, floating calculation of share ...

Okay Bogleheads, I'm looking for low-risk non-MM fund opportunities and was wondering what scenarios could lead to a loss in the Vanguard Short-term Bond fund (VBIRX)? Consider both risk to principal and yield.

As background, I review our portfolio plan with my wife quarterly. The object is to increase her understanding and to allow her to manage our portfolio (or at least to understand it) if I predecease her. We have simplified our plan over the last few years and she has a pretty good grasp on everything except for our retirement accounts. All our retirement accounts are in individual TIPS (bought ...

I've spent the last week or so looking for a new bond fund in which to invest some of my "safe" money available from maturing CDs and the part of TIAA that will be rolled over to FIDO in January. The more I hunt the more I find things I don't understand;I'd appreciate advice. I hold a nice amount of FGMNX and will stay with it but wanted to pair it with a flexible bond fund that includes ...

Howdy, I've been enjoying this forum for a while now, but this is my first post. I tried searching for similar questions to no avail. Please try to be gentle! My retirement money is currently split about 50/50 between a Vanguard Roth IRA and a 401k. Both are 100% stocks. I'm happy with the 401k for now, but I'd like to change my AA to 90% stocks/10% bonds by buying VBMFX (...

The only FIDO only bond fund I own is FBNDX. Wondering if I need to be a little more diversified in terms of bonds. I'm limited to FIDO funds only. Would a 50/50 mix of FBNDX and FSICX be a better choice? What about 50% FBNDX, 25% FSICX, 25% FNMIX? Suggestions would be very much appreciated. I know Erryl, DrH, Norbertc, and Anil are very knowledgeable about bonds. Peace to all....

I think this may have been addressed before, but I can't find it. Given the current situation with the bond run-up, is it a reasonable decision to convert some of my CREF stock (in my RA) into TIAA Traditional to boost my allocation of fixed assets? What should I be considering as down-sides of this?

Hi All, Al -- good point -- I shouldn't have said "any"! Rusty -- as Bob said I did mean to suggest that real and nominal are currently equivalent . . . Dick -- for me it was mostly a question of wanting to "rebalance" out of both stocks and bonds (or, more accurately, to stop buying as many stocks and bonds at the available prices beginning in September). But to date that's been a ...

Nagorak: agreed the AUM are scary, but I could not find a better option than HABDX. Once I looked into what the new Met West managers' other funds looked like, and saw their short-term bond fund that lost 50%, I wanted my money out of TGLMX now . Looking for an actively-managed bond fund which is not heavy in corporates, and hence is not a low-beta version of the stock market, whose ...

The most predictable income stream is withdrawing exactly what is planned or wanted from a portfolio by whatever manipulations (buying/selling) is required in the portfolio to do so. This results in uncertainty in the portfolio value, but provides income that is as exactly matched to the investor's needs as the investor wants it to be. Income tied to the behavior of investments in the ...

You could open a brokerage MM in your ROTH and buy Vanguard Bond ETFs. The expense ratio will be lower than a regular bond fund but commissions could be a problem if you buy in very small increments. The symbol for Total Bond Market ETF is "BND". Personally, I would prefer using the 401k to hold the bond fund and use your ROTH for stocks IF you don't use your ROTH as a piggy ...

grabiner wrote: TIPS gained a lot in the early years of the fund (because the initial rate turned out to be higher than the market demanded), and the fund continues to hold the TIPS it purchased then, so the NAV increase remained. drjay, I think posting this question on the American Funds Forum may not be as productive as posting it on the Income and Dividend Investing forum or one of the broader based forums. I believe those forums will give you a broader perspective of investors on issues such as this. What I have learned about CAIBX is that there is a very strong contingent of investors who use it in an "Income ...
