Looking for advice for a long weekend to San Francisco . My husband and I flying in to San Fran on a Thursday, driving to Napa Valley to spend night. Touring vineyards Friday. Friday either stay over again, or drive back to San Fran to stay night. Saturday tour San Francisco. Sunday we'd like to see the coastline/redwoods, but don't know what to do or how? Is Big Sur the same as 17 ...

I will be traveling to LA on Jan 23 for 6 nights. I really want to drive the PCH to Big Sur for a couple of days, visit Monterey as well as Big Sur & surrounding areas, then drive back down PCH & spend 2-3 days in Malibu or Santa Monica . Any ideas would be appreciated. What is the weather like this time of year in Monterey & Big Sur? I am considering staying in a cabin at the Big ...

I am forever planning a road trip in California. Having visited several times on short trips I would really love to take some time to travel around the state. I am doing some work with Lexus Magazine and I thought I would share and article that they have featuring a road trip that takes you along California's legendary Pacific Coast Hwy. The article is entitled Big Sur and it looks like...

We are planning on camping in big sur around christmas. Has anyone had similar experiences? Will it be doable with a decent tent + sleeping bag (0F rating)? What is the typical daytime and night time temperatures? Any recommendations on scenic campgrounds would be appreciated. Thanks, Ram

Is it a really bad idea to visit Big Sur with 2 dogs? Would we be shut out of most of the scenic places? Thinking of coming that way in a few weeks for a pre-Christmas weekend and want to bring the dogs but not if it doesn't make sense to do so. Any advice?

Where my wife and I live in Los Angeles we have run the gauntlet for crime. We have had the apartment broken into and cleaned out, the car stolen.... not to mention we have had the car broken into at least three times. I have a real issue with people stealing from me and for years I slept with a HK USP .45 match pistol cocked and locked with 230 grain +P+ hollow tipped rounds. Anyways as...

ronkala - Sounds like a wonderful trip. As I noted, the Anton Inn is in Pacific Grove, about 10 minutes from Monterey. The same owners also run the Lighthouse Inn which seems somewhat more upscale and I would imagine, more expensive. However, the Lighthouse Inn is very close to the ocean - maybe a 1-2 minute walk. Check that out too. The drive from Pacific Grove to Oakland Airport was a bit ...

Wow... what you posted as your vacation schedule/itinery seems somewhat of having 'full days' ahead... (And I can relate to not wanting to waste them on the traveling time between your points of interests...) Having said:" I don't really want to go too far, but want to see as much as possible." My suggestion would be to go see the Redwoods at Muir Woods National Monument in ...

If you enjoy stunning coastal scenery, and putting in some miles exploring a trip up the 101 to PCH (HWY 1) from Ventura to Big Sur is ~250 miles of some of the most beautiful road to travel! Check out Solvang for an old Eurpoean/Danish village (some great bakeries & food), Pismo Beach is a good stop, Hearst Castle is on the route as well. My opinion from what I recall from one of the ...

As mentioned by the previous responders, you will want to have rezzies in place ahead of time. Big Sur isn't the kind of place where you "just show up" and "hope" to find lodging. If you do this, you run the risk of having to back track to Carmel / Monterey (a 1 hour drive) or drive down Highway 1 possibly in the dark. I do not recommend that for the uninitiated Big Sur ...

Hey guys, Thanks for all of your responses. I managed to book Pfeiffer burns for a couple of days (Surprised to see that it got more than half booked for this season of the year, with all river side campsites gone!!!). The next time I visit in summer, I'm waiting to be stay at Kirk creek. Sorry for the confusion about the word 'scenic'. My version of scenic includes either ...

Personally I would not stay at the Big Sur Campgrounds & Cabins. Not much privacy between the cabins. They are Very Close to one another, and so is the parking of cars just outside of everyone's own cabin. For me, I require more space and a buffer zone away from others, as that being the reason why I like to stay in cabins in the Big Sur area. January is not that crowded as compared to ...

He's still thinking about his conversation with Ann, wondering if he's done the wise thing by opening the door to his soul to her, giving her the trust the old man had once earned by holding his secret and those of others like him. How do they find themselves here? WHY here? Why at all? He wishes he had more to give Ann, more she could take to Thorne, to her friend Uma, but the honest truth is ...
