I am a bassist of 9 years practice, working in almost all genres. I am finally confidently able to conclude who the best bassist on acoustic double bass and the best on electric are. They are not commonly talked about, since most people go for the flashy, fast bassists. These two are a combination of melody, harmony, and rhythm . They, are the two that make me proud to play the bass, and keep...

I'm on the hunt for examples of bassists playing jazz in 5/4. Please post any examples that you are aware of, especially if the bassist takes a solo! So far I am aware of two tracks: 1. Larry Grenadier plays "Anything Goes" in 5/4 (from Brad Mehldau's Anything Goes) 2. Esperanza Spalding plays "Body and Soul" in 5/4 (from Esperanza Spalding's Esperanza) Good luck!

Well, I was reading this: 9 Notable Guitarists that aren't Metal, Rock or Blues and i wondered; is there is a list similar to that for bassists? I know Willie Dixon composed a lot on the bass, but i want more examples of composition largely developed on bass outside of blues, rock, r&b or metal. This is the best forum for bassists, if anyone knows, it's you guys.

Ok, so I'm just starting to play bass and a couple of my buddies are thinking of forming a band. They all play instuments and if we all formed a band it would have two guitarists, a drummer, and two bassists . Would this many people make a good or a bad sound?

question for guitarists/bassists What is the name of that program that is used for music files that allows you to pick which instrument of a certain song you want to hear alone & can change the tempo of it to be able to learn the song? The files that it uses can be downloaded from Ultimate Guitar. I had it before but can't remember the ...

Im just curious, Is there a list anywhere of the top bassists who use 2 fingers or 3 fingers or etc?? Like, Apparently Bunny Brunel uses 2 fingers only.. but most of the more metal bassists like Billy Sheehan, John Myung, etc use 3 fingers.. Anyone know a list? I see builders like MTD, Roscoe, Elrick, Brubaker, Stambaugh, etc. using them almost exclusively in their basses. Then I read where a lot of bassists find them nasily sounding, too dark, not versatile enough, and there seems to be more guys who dislike them than like them. Me personally, I like them. I know they have different voicings and tones that come in the same shape but I'm sure these guys...

A question to all you bassists. This is really an observation if anything, but I've been wondering...how come in general the world of bass is more unconventional and experimental then that of the guitar world? I mean basses tend to be build in more unconvential shapes, made out of exotic woods, have unique features, ect while guitars ...

I love Amazon's $5 deals . There's lots of good albums there but two albums I really dig are Dave Carpenter on his six string bass and Cecil McBee playing with Pharaoh Sanders Dave played upright 75% of the time so there's not many recordings with him on the electric and Cecil McBee gives master classes on how to play an ostinato line on Thembi to his crazy chops on Love....

Right, I'm looking to see if there is a piece of slap-bass music out there which SPECIFICALLY uses a 5 string bass. I'm certain most of the well-known slap-bassists don't use 5s, but surely there must be some. Help?

I've been listening to a lot of Marvin Gaye lately and I've been reading that Jamerson and Rainey played a lot of bass on Marvin Gaye tracks. Any info on the two bassists? The bass work from Let's Get It On, IMO, is absolutely incredible.

Dear Fellow Bassists In these trying economic times, especially here in Michigan, I ask all of you to please support your local mom and pop guitar store instead of giving your hard earned money to a multi-million dollar corporation such as GC. In my experience stores like that are out to make as much money as possible and could care less about the customer. (but that's just my opinion.)

A power trio is fine for bassists who use roundwounds. Any more musicians in the band and the need for flats is greatly needed. Dual guitars, keys, multi vocals, fiddle, snyth, whatever, the more musicians in the band the more your overall sound will benefit from flats. You see, with flats you come up from below with a thick undercurrent of bass, an 18 inch slab-of-granite foundation for ...

I just found out about a new Terry Plumeri interview on For Bass Players Only. Terry talks about a variety of things, from studying composition and conducting with Antal Dorati, to his appreciation of bassists as diverse as Robert Brennand, Paul Chambers, Scott LaFaro, Eddie Gomez, George Mraz, Gerald Jemmott, and Chuck Rainey. Pretty inspirational, really. Enjoy! http://www....

Are there any solo bassists that are of an equivalent or similar style to Joe Satriani? While there are quite a few bassists that impress me with their abilities (Manring/Lawson/Schmidt), their specific styles aren't of the type that I could just put on the stereo in the background while doing something. I'm also not a big fan of the heavily percussive Wooten styles either.
