Greetings, I am 56, 'retired' at 47 with a healthy 401k, am married but we keep investment accounts separate, have a very nice emergency account and rental income. Other than the emergency account, all my money is in an IRA which I see no need to access for at least 10 years. We own 3 homes, two are paid off (my home which generates rental income is paid off) and one that we plan to sell soon...

I am wondering whether I should change my investment strategy after converting to a Roth next year. I am 72 and I have started my RMD in 2008, but will not take one this year. I have a defined benefit pension and a 403b (which I am thinking of converting to a Roth) and I am also collecting Social Security. I intend to pay the conversion taxes using post-tax savings from outside of the 403b....

I understand and agree with the view that a retired person should not consider Social Security to be a bond and adjust her asset allocation accordingly. But would you say that the same thing is true of a SPIA? If you annuitized part of your egg, and would you consider your allocation to be derived only from the non-annuitized portion, or in combination with the SPIA? Example:...

For one of my portfolios (Daughter 11 yr has 15 yrs to invest), I have decided on a assett Allocation as Stock 90%, Bond 8%, Cash 2% The question I have I a Children Mutual Yougster Bond alread running which accounts for 8% of the investment portfolio already and wanted to know as this is a BOND, would that be suffice for the 8% bond I mention earlier in assett allocation. Or Is the ...

Hi, I have 20% of my portfolio in SEQUX. I have been using it as us-equity-large-growth portion of my portfolio. However, it holds 23% in cash currently. This is a pretty large percentage. Should I take it into account or treat SEQUX as large-growth equity? Similar question about PTRAX, it shows -36% in cash (leveraged) and 130% in bonds. Should I take that into account, or treat all ...

Thanks to those of you who take a look at this. I have recently transferred funds out of my wives 401-K into a traditional IRA at Vanguard. This all was due to her job loss. I did this exchange when the Dow was at 10,000 and the NASDAQ at 2105 so I missed part of the jump but it could have just as easy gone in the other direction. Iâm interested in ideas for asset allocation in my ...

For some reason, people automatically assume they need to get more conservative in their portfolio when they retire. Its probably because they read it in a financial magazine somewhere that says all retirees should do it. But, times have changed. More...

My mother is 72 without any debts but has a sizeable sum in the bank earning a pittance of an interest rate. She would like the money to pay her a better rate than she is getting without it being at too much risk. Any thoughts on gilts, corporate bonds and high yield bonds. Also national savings rates and what the asset allocation should be or any other form of safe investment at her age...

Hello, I would like to know if it is possible to get the source code for the "Allocation by Asset Class", and the "Transaction Register" report extension. When I generate the report, there are many garbage character appeared along with the report. So I want to see if I can get the source code so I can rewrite it to fix this problem. Since no one complained about this issue ...

LDR: One other consideration that I don't believe has been menioned is the matter of asset location. It is not clear (maybe I missed it) if the Roth will be the dominant holding in your portfolio or not. But I believe there is wisdom in the idea that the assets with the highest expected return should be held in the Roth. This is a good idea because the Roth is usually the last "bucket"...

I have owned Sequoia for many many years and in all that time they have never owned a tech stock. I would usually consider them large value. They like Buffett are not interested in companies whose product may become obsolete. In the past they have indicated that they do not market time but that a high cash position indicates that they are having trouble finding things to buy at current prices....

BTW, on my fund switch, I was able to avoid the dividend by selling Int Growth before that one distributed, and buying FTSE after it distributed dividends. Would not have needed that if the distribution dates were reversed. Didn't have to worry about cap gains distributions last year . Had to be out of the market with that money for about 10 days to do that, so I ...

Quote: (I also have an SDA account so I can invest in other funds.) I'd just put target retirement 2015 in all the accounts (if you can get in the 401k SDA account if you can get with low expense) and be done with it. It's 60/40 with 20% international.
