I'm mainly looking for some practical guidance here. I'd like to build an electromagnet coil that's capable of magnetizing fresh Alnico V (unmagnetized) pole pieces for use in electric guitar pickups. The maximum pole piece size I need to accomodate is 0.195" in diameter and 0.710" in length. For practical purposes, I'd like to build a coil that's 1" long....

One way to get a high current current pulse into a coil is shown in the attached thumbnail. In this case, a 25-milliFarad capacitor, charged to 1000 volts, is discharged into a 295-microHenry coil. The thumbnail shows the 1000-volt half cycle creating an 8,000 amp pulse for ~5 milliseconds. The components can be adjusted to vary the peak amps and the pulse length. In magnetizing electrically-...

I can't tell you what pickups work best with flatwounds, but I can tell you what pickups I like best with flatwounds. I like passive pickups with alnico 5 magnets. Keep in mind I string my Fender P-Basses with flatwounds, and am after the Motown/Stax Bass tones. I really like the basic Fender Orginal '62 P-Bass pickups.

I'm looking to buy either the APS-1 or a SSL-5 or possibly any other Seymour Ducan staggered single coil pickup. IF anyone has one for sale, post away. I can trade parts if that is what you are looking for or pay cash. I live in NJ for shipping purposes. thanks

I have 2 of these in my Traben. All I can say is it is a very aggressive natural sounding pickup. The best one I have heard yet. This is a great buy. If I needed it, I'd be all over this.
