I was reading a chapter on Alkynes in my Org chem book when a question arose. I read that traditionally acetelyene can be prepared from ethyelene as such: Ethene Acetylene + H 2 (1150°C) And the reverse of the reaction is hydrogenation while using a lindlar catalyst: Acetylene + H 2 Ethene (cat. Lindlar) Obviously the second reaction takes severly less energy to happen because ...

Many years ago I had the experience of welding lengths of mild steel pipe together to make refrigeration coils. I used conventional oxy-acetylene equipment and held the pipe a couple of millimeters apart when starting the weld to ensure good penetration. I now want to do a similar task only this time I am using one inch diameter stainless steel pipe and butt elbows and I am using a Henrob ...

Oxy-acetylene cutting set Got a mini cutting set up for sale as i am now using full size cylinders. works perfectly and will cut thick beams if req, takes smaller size oxygen and acetylene cylinders, which fit on the trolley. set is ready to use (minus cyls of course) with cutting torch, regulators (that can be used on full size ...

Was just looking across craigslist, found this: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/pen/tls/1472951346.htm l Will an acetylene torch without oxygen be better than the oxy/MAPP setup I'm using at present? Will it even work for phase at all? Thanks for the help guys

Acetylene gas (ethyne; HC≡CH) burns in an oxyacetylene torch to produce carbon dioxide and water vapor. The heat of reaction for the combustion of acetylene is -1259 kJ/mol. (a) Calculate the C≡C bond energy. (b) When 716.0 g of acetylene burns, how many kilojoules of heat are given off? So I got the equation 2(C2H2)+5(O2) :rarrow:4(CO2)+2(H2O)...but no idea what to do with it :S

...not really a power tool, but thought I'd see if anyone knows the answer. I've often heard a rule of thumb that a flow rate of less than 1/7 the tank volume per hour is required for acetylene if you don't want something bad--like the tank exploding--to happen. Anyone have any idea what that 1/7th would be in terms of PSI at the torch for a B-tank?

Where Chip Foose (possibly his Dad?) painted a steering wheel faux wood? He used soot from an acetylene torch and a feather as part of the process. Cant remember which episode it was.

kia, If this is a "one time" requirement, I'd suggest you find someone to tig weld the pipe for you. I'm sure there are guys on here that could gas weld it (not me), but I also suspect you'll destroy more material (considering the cost of SS pipe) while learning, than it would cost you to have someone tig it. Always helps to post up your location.

oh duh sorry it's been a while since I've done any general chemistry. that makes sense though. i was confusing equilibrium stuff with thermochemistry by thinking that whatever side of the reaction is favored under STP must be due to the it's heat of formation. thanks

Here's an overview of oxy-acetylene. Pay particular attention to the info about not opening the acetylene tank valve too much or allowing the output pressure to exceed 15 PSI. http://www.metalwebnews.com/howto/weld/weld.html
