Penfed is currently offering 5% APY on their 3, 4, 5, and 7 year CDs with a $1,000 minimum deposit. I'm toying with the idea of moving a bit of loose cash into a $5,000 CD. Right now that 5% APY is better than anything on Bankrate that I can see.

Our vendor (JHA) gives us the option when calculating the APY on an individual CD initial TIS disclosure to base it on the frequency of interest payment (monthly or at term). It has been our procedure when the customer elects to get their CD interest monthly, to calcuate the APY based on monthly interest distribution instead of as if it were going to be paid at term. For those who are seeking safety, peace of mind, and want to stash some cash for a rainy day, I suggest the following. Wachovia, soon to be Citibank or Wells Fargo whenever they make up their minds, has a one-year CDs paying 4.3% APY. Washington Mutual's banking operation is being bought by J.P. Morgan Chase. Wamu has an online one-year CD paying 5.0% APY. I know those are available for ...

I don't totally understand how the JPM takeover affects the security of WAMU deposits, so I gotta ask... Since WAMU is offering a high 4% APY on savings accounts, is it safe to put in more than $100k now?

Also, I was reading on their web site and it says: "Your savings federally insured to at least $100,000 and backed by the full faith and ...
