Hi, I signed a 2-year contract for overseas work. I currently max 401k and Roth IRA (25% tax bracket). My income is under the foreign earned income exclusion and the foreign living allowance. I will owe no tax. I read that one should never contribute after tax dollars to a tax-deferred accounts: The Quiet Millionaire p. 346: Quote: Never ...

The concept of working for someone else, my fellow wolves is dead an dangerous. While you're slaving and grinding to make Mr. Aig and Ms. Walmart a billionaire, they're playing Vegas with your 401k. It's time to start the Rebelution and it won't be televised, it's already started. If you don't know how to hunt you will starve, because being dependent upon your boss to feed you is infantile....

Breaking News The company 401K match is coming back in January of 2010. Even if it is only at a 50% from the old level, it still is a great deal for those that invest at least 6% to their 401K Plan. The new schedule is as follow: First 1% gets a 50% match. While the next 5% get 25% match. So for the first 6% you will get 1.75% match. If you make $40,000 per year the ...

I worked the first three months of this year on a freelane basis, and the remainder on staff at a company at which I contributed to the 401k. Does anyone know if I can still contribute to an IRA as well for this year? Thanks in advance.

Haven't been doing much investing lately so I haven't been posting. I bought some FEGIX today in my 401k account which is limited to mutual funds. I probably would have bought ETFs or CEFs otherwise. Happy Thanksgiving to all members of this board! JB Gabriel

We have a credit car with $24k on it. I have the ability to pay off the credit card with a loan from my 401k where I can pay it back automatically from my paycheck with 4.87% interest to myself. I know that it is always mentioned as a last resort but I am seriously considering it. It would be for 5 years and the payment would be roughly the same payments I make if I pay the minimum on the ...

Hey all, Lots of smart people here so I figured I would pose this question to the group. If you leave an employer and you have 401k plus stock what happens with it? Are you able to get it (minus taxes) in cash or are you required to roll it in to an IRA or new employers 401k? Also no sure what happens with the stock part of it. Thanks in Advance

I currently have a 401K plan which I offer to my 6 employees. The plan costs me $7,000 a year which includes the administrative costs plus the 3% match I give each employee. The maximal deferral I could make would be $39K. However, recently I am no longer sure that the 401K is so worthwhile. Since taxes are almost certainly going up, the monies that you put in now are going to be ...
I am 66 year old retired man. My wife is 64 y/o and getting ready to retire. Her 401K recently added a couple of mutual funds to the basket of funds she can chose from. VAIPX=Vanguard Inflation Protected Sec. PTTRX=PIMCO Total Return We can shift around several thousand 401K dollars and buy into these if we want. We are quite conservative investors, historically. We ...

Ugh, so still unemployed, and getting very near the end of being cash positive at the end of the month. I am investigating whether i should take the hit and withdraw 401k or not. i am aware the penalties, but I have a question. If I withdraw full amount 20% comes off the top before the check, i then have 60 days to put in IRA without penalty. At the end of the tax year that 20% goes as a credit...

Can I divest all my 401k holdings, pay the commissions, place the cash result into an IRA and buy a house? Can I buy two houses? Three? As many as I can? Does my IRA pay for and lose the maintenance cost? more info on doing this would be helpful. thanx slakk

I got the decision coming up whether to keep my traditional pension plan or move to a matching 401K, what would you do? The say the matching 401k will be from 3-9% and I'm guessing this will go by years served with the company but they haven't rolled everything out yet! -NF

(If you've ever seen any of my other threads, you'll know I give out too much detail in my backstory....skip ahead to the question below if you don't feel tl;dr ) I spent the last 5 years as a sole proprietor working on a contract basis. I opened an Individual 401k since I made too much to put into a Roth IRA and the max limit of my Traditional IRA wasn't high enough for my comfort. I was ...
