I'm looking into upgrading 2 or 3 of the devs machines here. I'm quite happy with the performance of my i7-920 (Socket 1366) at home, but I wonder if the difference is worth the price compared to an i5, or an i7-860 (Socket 1156). Any suggestions? Here are some rough initial prices from our supplier, all other aspects being the same: i5, Socket 1156: €595 i7, Socket 1156: €657 i7, Socket 1386: ...

With the new LGA 1156 platform, Gigabyte introduced five new motherboards; the P55 UD3L, P55-UD3R, P55-UD4P, P55-UD5, and the P55-UD6. The P55-UD3L is the least expensive costing $124 USD and the UD6 is the most expensive costing $249 USD. Coming right in the middle of the pack is the P55-UD4P, costing $169 USD. Gigabyte has given every potential buyer a quality choice depending on their budget ...

Hi guys, Could you recommend a good socket 1156 CPU Cooler? I was going to go with the Corsair H50 but it was out of stock and I've changed my mind. So Which Cooler would be best? Thanks in advance.

In August, Intel introduced a new, less expensive line of processors using LGA 1156. This family so far consists of three processors, the i7 870, i7 860, and the i5 750. The i7 8xx processor is a slightly scaled-down version of the i7 9xx, the main difference being a new memory controller that supports only dual-channel memory. But it really isnt quite that simple, the LGA 1156 processors have ...

MSI P55-GD65 LGA 1156 Motherboard Review - MSIs latest Intel P55 based board looks to be cut from the same mold as its big brother P55-GC80 motherboard. The GD65 is mean, lean, and ready to rumble. While it does not pack in all the features of the GD80, the GD65 does not act like a $155 motherboard. Quote: MSI continues it P55 HardOCP Gold Editors Choice...

I recently upgraded my motherboard, CPU and Ram (as per specs below) and after formatting my hard drive I can't seem to complete a fresh installation of windows 7 x64 on my new upgraded system. It seems to work with a RC copy but when I try my MSDN copy it won't complete and hang at completing installation (after first reboot) for several hours with the bar not moving. When I first installed x64...

I'm working on building a light-duty ESX server for my office. We're planning on running several small VMs, nothing too serious or IO heavy. I would like to find a decent quality motherboard (with ECC) where the onboard LAN and SATA controller are supported by ESX. I'm planning on a simple RAID 1 configuration so I don't believe I need an add-on card. The hardware compatibilty lists I've ...
One of the main reasons I switched to i5 from my AMD rig was because of the impressive power saving features... I have a small computer room that heats up really fast, and any help in bringing the temps down is welcome. Now from what I've been reading, it seems that 1156 has severe stability issues with power saving features enabled on OC'ed chips. If I turn power saving off, it pretty ...

Looking for some more opinions on 860 vs. the Xeon (w/ HT) Lynnfield line. I will be overclocking (w/ Hyper 212+), but without amping up the voltage too much, and keeping TurboBoost/etc on. x3440 - $240 - 2.53ghz i7-860 - $290 - 2.8ghz, better turbo caps Is the Xeon a no brainer or might the 860 have an easier and higher ceiling OC ride or something else that would make me regret not...

ASRock announced three new H55 boards, designed to utilise Intel's upcoming Clarkdale Core i7 and Core i5 LGA 1156 processors. The H55M Pro and H55M are rather similar mATX with varying feature sets. The Pro version has 4 DDR3 slots, 2 Firewire connectors, 1 eSATA port and ASRock DuraCap capacitors. The H55M has just two memory slots and no Firewire, but it offers 2 eSATA ports and all-solid...
