It's pretty well documented that some of the Sharps calibers could be accurate at 1000 yards. And there's word (not documented) that it could reach out and touch someone at 1500 yards, (Billy Dixon). Buffalo Hunt: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACIas3sW ... re=related One thing for sure, these early frontiersmen understood exterior ballistics for the knowlege that was available in their ...

I bought this from Ben about a year or so ago. It's a nice H&R 45/70 single action with a 22" barrel. It's great for those pesky buffalo that get in your yard. The pictures I have are too large to download on here so if you want one send me your email address. Asking $250 but I'll consider reasonable offers.

> First off who has an encore and do you have a .45-70 barrel? If so how does it shoot? I'm looking at 100 yards or less OK? A son is the best friend you will ever have

I know this is a huge controversy. I am looking to purchase my first big bore within the next few months. I am trying to find the difference between the 2. My cousin has the .444 and my brother at the .45-70. I like both rounds but can't make up my mind. anyone have their 2 thoughts? either caliber I go with, it will be the Marlin XLR with the synthetic stock, stainless, with 24" barrel. I...

I have a pristine Marlin blued 45/70 model 1895 from the 1970s. It has gorgeous walnut stocks with no checkering. Bluing is very nice; it does have a few little marks here and there on the metal and stocks, nothing major, just everyday wear and tear. I have fired it once but I got it used, it does shoot well. I will sell it with the Bushnell Trophy 3-9x on it(Leupold rings and bases) for $...

I had read a thread earlier that stated that hot 45/70 buffalo bore loads can only be shot in Ballard Type rifling. I was wondering if the 1895 Guide Gun I just bought has Ballard type rifling or not. If not what kind of rifling does it have.

As my screen name indicates, go 45/70. Even if you don't reload you can buy anemic factory rounds that are equal to the black powder cartridges used to decimate the buffalo herds. However, if you want to go with some real stompers you can buy those too, or if you know a reloader I'm sure they will help you out.

Thanks. I just ordered a Lee crimping die ($11) so I'll give that a shot. If it doesn't work and/or I'm not successful in grinding it, I may get the Hornady die. However, I'm actually considering not loading any more Hornady ammo, maybe. My son shot a doe recently with a 44 mag Hornady LeverRevolution bullet and it looked like a shotgun exit wound where the bits of bullet (likely the pieces ...
