Remove Advertisements I recently had to replace my magneto cover and I obviously had to take off the upper idle gear cover to do that. I went to pull out my starter torque limiter and the whole thing fell apart in my hands when I pulled it out. The snap ring on the back of the assembly was broken. I don't really feel like spending the $140 to buy the ...

You’ll just need to find a off the shelf snap ring that fits the groove width in the shaft and the diameter of same. gauge set will help you get the width, and a micrometer or good caliper will get you the shaft diameter (remember you need the dia of the shaft INSIDE the groove) Use those two measurements and go to a fastener shop, bearing supply store or even an old school auto parts ...

This is the clip you need, there are two used for the assembly Available from any OEM dealer if you do not want to source one on your own. Item number three. Also used on the back side of item number 5 CIRCLIP, GEAR SHIFT LEVER 08331-3112A

Thanks for your help on the snapring. Do you happen to know which way those washers face? The diagrams I've looked at always only show the front of the torque limiter assembly, the side closer to the cover. I haven't seen a diagram that shows the back end of it.

Yeah, but which way does the concave side of the washer face? Does the concave side face outwards towards the idle gear cover or does it face inwards?

Just from memory, the convex side faces toward the cover. I think you will find that the washer is actually a spring. The whole assembly is in compressed together by this spring. As mickeydee says, you will need to find a way to compress the assembly to get the new snap ring in place. Personally, I wouldn't bother with it.
