This does seem to hold true, and then after the initial good 2-3 games without them they start struggling, but don't have stats to back it up

I noticed that trend as well, but don't have the numbers to back it up.

My research indicates it applies to injury, but not family matters or personal reasons. Also, it applies to swine flu. But not the regular flu. Go figure, huh?
