Thread: weird side affect of implants?

I've been doing research on cochlear implants and since there are several mommies of CI kiddos, i wanted to ask..have any of them lost their sense of taste on the side of the tongue that they were implanted on? I've read several accounts of ppl who were implanted and lost their sense of taste. Its been known to be a side affect because the nerves to the tongue are super close to the surgery site...

No wierd side effects here.  I know quite a few kids with ci's and several adults, and none have ever reported experiencing this. HTH, Robin

thanks a bunch..I've read more about it and itis a odd sie effect,but it worried me initially. Thanks for the encouragement though. I really appreciate it. Surgeries worry me but I want whats best for my DD no matter what. I'm so glad i've found a good support group here :)

I should add that I was told the exact same thing as Venus mentioned above.  But I've never actually heard of this happening to a specific person.

I just met with our surgeon the other day and while explaining the surgery to me, she did say that at a point in the surgery they get VERY close to the facial nerve(s?) and that it's a point where they have to be very very precise, b/c if affected it could effect facial movements, taste etc etc. But she said it is uncommon to have any issues, it's just one of the risks that they encounter during...

We were told this also, but our ENT used a facial nerve monitor during surgery.  I didn't even know she did that until Payton came out of surgery with marks on her face...then she told us about it.  Ask your ENT if they use that...might help ease your fears a little bit. I might add that if your LO will never know the difference.  It's like hearing with a CI vs hearing with our ears.  They ...
