Thread: volvo bellhousing shimming... Q

Started 1 year, 6 months ago by 740ATL
Guys. I've only had one apart a couple times, but volvo M46/M47 bellhousings have a small shim between the B/H and the transmission. Is this shim a standard size? Can I swap bellhousings/shims without problem? I need to make use of the bellhousing, but want to keep the transmission. I'd like to be able to reuse the transmission at a later date. just wondering. Mike

I've never seen a shim, just a small paper gasket.

Shim? There should be no shim. There is a gasket though, usually of some paper compound. EDIT: In fact, VADIS states that it is an asbestos free gasket. Part number 1340989. Getrag's have shims behind the front cover/assembly, and they are gearbox specific. Sure you're not mixing up the M46 and getrags?

If there is a shim, it's probably there to properly preload the input shaft bearing. Since the bellhousing acts as the bearing retainer.

EDIT: Also, IIRC the mainshaft's front bearing is not a tapered roller bearing, so no preload adjustment should be present:
