I have a 2000 p/s and was about to do the 6.0 intercooler in 7.3 mod. My question, now, after doing some measuring,is it really going to help. If my figures are correct, there is 1065 cu.in.in the 7.3 and 1216 cu.in. in the 6.0 intercooler. Is this small difference of 152 cu.in. going to make any difference in the cooling of the air from the turbo?
I was going to do this mod based on replies on ...
if your egt's are running consistantly at max temp, then the cooler will
help. 50* is about the difference you will see. that can be big deal while
pulling trailers in the hills. i personally spent the big money and got an
after market. i bought the diesel innovations. why gamble? pulling warped
exhaust manifolds is not a fun job, i speak from experience.
I think it made a significant difference in EGTs on mine. I cannot get it over about 1250 on the longest hard mountain pull. Most times it wont get over 1100. It made a noticeable difference in acceleration....
This a follow-up on your reply, on what I posted,in regard to 6.0 intercooler in a 7.3. Can you get me the measurement of the 6.0 intercooler you used? I bought a used one and the core is narrower, by4in.than the 7.3 but it is higher and thicker. Is there more than one type? I am trying to figure out if it is worth the effort of exchanging them.
Thanks for your reply

Anyone that has done the "6.0 intercooler in a 7.3 mod",please send me the core dimensions of the 6.0 intercooler. I would really appreciate it.
Thanks a bunch

I've always heard you're really not going to see much of a difference unless you do a lot of towing. If youre just driving it, its really not worth the time and money.

I pull a 15k 5er, in mountains of Colo,AZ MT at elevations of 3500 to 10000 ft.,
so I really have to watch the EGTs I can hit temps of 1250deg very easily
Thanks for the reply

I think its a pretty involved process to get that thing out of there and clean it up. You have to essentially flush it and then let it sit all day to make sure it gets good and dry. Seems like I remember someone saying you have to use a prybar to get it out? Id be itnerested to see if people have done it and how hard it is
More tubes is good. I would be surprised if it doesn't cool a little better. Towing heavy, I wouldn't install one without having a real coolant temp gauge. I would want to see if it had an effect on the coolant temp. Are you drawing intake air from the engine compartment? If yes, you can lower temps by changing that. After that there is different tuning. And regardless of your combination, you need RPM's to stay cool.

Without the CCV mod I have wondered if just cleaning the intercooler would help. Probably a lot of oil in there. How hard would it be to pull it out and clean with a good degrreaser and water?
