Thread: ultrasonic cleaning question?

Started 3 years, 6 months ago by jwv2001
The last time I cleaned some cases, after the finally rinse the cases have a pink cast to them. What is going on? They are very clean but the brass has a copper look to it.

I think the neutralising step with baking soda is critical as I had some cases discolour like this. I switched to the 'clean and shiney' method and this problem has ceased. Apart from the colour of the brass, I believe 'clean and shiney' gives a better end result- primers still seat easily and brass feels smooth and not 'dry' like it did with the 'cheap and clean' method. what bully eye said... Sometimes the baking soda setep will give you the color if everything isnt perfect... I have also been using strictly the "Clean and Shiney" procedure for a couple months now...no purple... And yes, when that color change happens, it seems it changes the surface finish of the brass and will make primers harder to seat. JB

I'm using the 'clean and shiny' method. I've never had this happen before.

Clean and shiney is the best way to go, never had any discoloring using it.

here's a wild question, in all the experiments to find the perfect ultrasonic cleaning regimen, has anyone tried petroleum naptha solvent (common automotive solvent) as a cleaning agent? Or conversely can anyone think of a good reason to keep this stuff away from ones cases?

jb1000br replied 3 years, 6 months ago
I'd rather not inhale it honestly...but let me know if it works I tried GUNK carb/parts cleaner...wans't impressed at all... JB

I don't (currently) have an ultrasonic cleaner, but I use the solvent to get rid of the spray-on sizing lube from inside the case/neck. It works splendidly at this, and it is volatile enough to evaporate easily (though much less volatile than carb cleaner, etc.). As for harmful effects... haven't noticed any.... twitch, blink, twitch.... Darrell

Any one have any experience with Iosso case cleaner? Specifically, I can't tell whether this stuff has ammonia in it or not... can't smell any, but?? I finally got an ultrasonic cleaner (harbor freight model) and attempted to re-invent the wheel. (no fancy Plexiglas beaker holder yet) Dumped 20 or so "test victims" into a "Glad" storage container (fits beautifully across the ultrasound ...

I use a product called Alconox. I used it years ago in US cleaners. It's a powdered cleaner, mixed with water, made for cleaning metal and plastic precision parts and a host of other applications. Some US cleaner manufacturers even supply a free sample with their machines. Cases come out looking like new and no pink. Do an Internet search on 'Alconox', it's really good stuff. I've recommended...

I had forgotten about this. I requested a free sample months ago and never got anything. Maybe I should have spread it on a little thicker in the questionaire. From the MSDS it looks a lot like conventional dish washer detergent but if it works and doesn't etch the brass that's fine. Where do you buy the stuff? The minimum Alconox sells directly is quite a lot.

Alconox is a hospital grade cleaner and should be available in any medical supply department, if there are any tattoo parlors nearby ask them where they get theres. I've used it for years in my ultra sonic for making squeakey clean gun parts.
