Hi all, I am travelling to Kenya / Tanzania in a week and now that I have planned the route, I have few questions: 1. What is the best option to travel from Nairobi to Mombasa? Bus or plane? If bus, how much time does it take and how much does is cost? As I intend to spend a day in Mombasa, then I plan to go to a 2 days safari in Tzavo or Amboseli and after that to Dar Es Salaam. 2...

Bus takes about 7 hours a bit less if you're lucky and costs around 1000Ksh. There is more info on my transportation tips on my Kenya page. Not sure about bus to Dar but the place in Mombasa to catch the Dar bus is Mwembe Tayari the other side of the roundabout from the Coasrt Bus office.

1. Best option to travel to mombasa is to get the overnight train 2nd class. It is a sleeper so you save on a hotel room. The price includes dinner and breakfast. Its pretty cheap not more tha 25 euro one way. The train is called the Lunatic Express and it is a journey not to be missed. The train leaves at 7pm and arrives in Mombasa at 0900 the following morning. Check out the schedule ...

To get to Mombasa from Nairobi, take the Mombasa Raha shuttle that leaves late at night from downtown ( usually off of Muindi Mbingu street). The shuttle is a bit cramped for space, but is safe and gets you into Mombasa by around 9 am. From Mombasa you can walk around and easily find some good deals to Amboseli with local travel companies, though you will be given the highest price first.
