On my 02 wrx I have a torn left front axle boot, it flung grease everywhere underneath and looks like mud. Does a torn axle seal automatically mean you have to replace the whole axle? Or is it probably contaminated or worn due to driving without having grease in it now?
How long has it been like this? What does it look like. I've always caught mine early and the joint was not dry and I got away with just a boot replacements for about $30 bucks in parts and an hour of my time.
If the joint is all dray and dirty, you can try just fixing the boot, but it's probably pretty worn already.

Yes, I've heard the same thing. Don't mess with spending time/money on the boots, just get a new/remanufactured axle. I will actually be doing mine this weekend as BOTH fronts ...

Exactly. After doing a dozen or so boots on a bunch of cars, I can change a boot itself in <15 minutes if all goes well. Seems to me that the $20 to $30 for boot/bands/grease is worth the savings.

New from Subaru? Not likely.
New from some aftermarket maker? Take your chances, personal choice, but I won't risk it based on my past experience. Well, maybe on my beater impreza, but not on my WRX.
How much do you make and hour that 15 minutes worth of work for 30 to 40 bucks savings isn't worth it?

I did.
Wow; wish there was an Advance Auto parts near me. Autozone didn't even carry 04 ...
This happened to me.
I noticed it the day after I was teaching a girl to drive stick. I was also launching hard later that night and have been for about 2 years (ppg).
I told her it was her fault heh.

I'd buy the NEW axle...no core to return....keeping the axle I replaced with the new one and re-boot that one for a spare to swap straight in if needed and that would give me 2 axles for ~$75 and the grease ya need for cv joints costs more than $3.50 if ya do...
Who'd you blow to get that price. If I could get a new one for 50.00 I'd not do a boot either. Instead, I can only fine re-mans for $85+. I remember Advanced being pretty good store when I lived in MI. Checker sucks ass.

One time I sat around and drank beer, whilst laughing my a$$ off because my buddy wanted to save $25 dollars by rebooting the axle himself. You don't have to worry about axle/tranmission problems in a Subaru because they only give you half of the axle anyway. You can actually swap them without taking it out of the trans or draining the trans. The funny thing is you will never see a bad axle with a good boot, the boot always fails first.
