This isn't a bathroom question, but I know there's more tiling expertise here than in basements, thus my selection of fora. I was at my sister's this past week and she's got a hole in her basement wall from a stovepipe, since removed. It vented through a wall. She's had it covered with plywood for a few years, so I pulled that off and bricked up the outside opening. The inside is tiled, ...

I'd recommend a fairly dry pack to minimize curing shrinkage or hydraulic cement. Depending on the setup and your skill level (and you have pretty good skills), it might have to be done in a couple of applications.
