Started 1 month, 1 week ago by Maine Colonial
This thread is for discussion of the second book in Stieg Larsson's Millennium trilogy: THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE. Join us to talk about Mikael Blomkvist, Lisbeth Salander and how "All the Evil" in Lisbeth's past returns. All are welcome to join our discussion. However, please be aware that this discussion will include SPOILERS from both THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE and its ...
Barb, are you there? Can't wait to hear your review. I'll be posting in the morning, but I'm curious to hear from people whether they preferred DRAGON TATTOO or FIRE---and why. By the way, Amazon changed my thread title to take away the capitalization. Weird.
Maine and all. Deinately THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO was great but THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE was far better so can't wait until i listen to the next one My problem I will have to wait for others to post as you can understand I have no idea how to spell any of the names and i listened to it on my ipod while walking the greyhounds. there were so many parts i wanted to post about. ...
Thanks Maine for kicking us off! I was impressed by how different these two books were. The first seemed more mystery, the second thriller. But I've always gotten these genres confused... I loved both books, but I think I slightly more enjoyed THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATOO. Perhaps it's because I liked the introduction to all the characters. The first book felt victorian gothic, yet ...
Ginny, Maine, Oh ginny you listened to it on Audible also so we will have to wait for someone else to spell the names then we can copy them and then continue. There were so many parts of the story i would love to debate. Barb
Uh oh, Barb wants to debate! Well, let's start.... I liked DRAGON TATTOO a little better than FIRE. I agree with Ginny; it felt more like a mystery, while FIRE felt more like a thriller. I enjoyed getting to know the characters for the first time. In FIRE, it felt to me like a lot of the time was spent essentially trying to explain why Lisbeth is the way she is. I still liked it, but ...
Maine, That is a great list of characters! Just like in the front of Golden Age Mysteries of yore. It will be a help to be able to refer to it. Thanks.
Hey, YOOHOO, is anybody ready to discuss the book? One thing I got a kick out of was when Mikael enters Lisbeth's new apartment toward the end of the book. I liked that we thought we knew the apartment, but it turns out it's so much bigger and more elaborate than we knew. Lisbeth saw it as purely utilitarian. She didn't change her lifestyle to live there and she used only the space she ...
I get too personally involved. My fear was that Lisbeth had truly left the apartment behind for good. I was depressed by this thought. Do you think she will go back to it? From the beginning of the book I became anxious for Lisbeth's safety and this kept the book moving along for me. It became clear that I had misinterpreted the opening paragraphs, which are at least part of Lisbeth's Bad...
Maine and all, Re Dragon more of a mystery and FIRE is more of a thriller Maybe that is why I liked FIRE more!!!!! so many mysteries are just so manbie pambie that FIRE is just so thrilling and gripping gets a 6 star from me!!! LISBETH SALANDER I presume it is not a problem jumping all over the book did anyone else have tears in their eyes when lisbeth started to learn how to...
Maine re: Mikael enters Lisbeth's new apartment I love him setting the alarm off and quickly trying to work out the alarm code. Not knowing that she was watching on close circuit camera and waiting for a spray (something) to go off after a little while. I am smiling here and he worked out the code. I had the biggest smile on my face when he worked it out. I was so into this story so ...
Review of DIRK GENTLYS HOLISTIC DETECTIVE AGENCY by Douglas Adams * * * * * 5 star "Dirk Gently" is a combination of ghost, horror, detective, time-travel, and romantic comedy. His Detective agency mainly succeeds in tracking down missing cats for old ladies, but then is stumbles into a four-billion year old mystery that must be solved if the human race is to avoid immediate extinction. This audio is a BBC 4 full cast...
Condorena, Thanks. I didn't say in my previous post that I really liked your response to my original post about the issue of private revenge, Condorena. Very articulate defense of Salander. I'm wondering if you went to law school in addition to medical school. If not, maybe you'll want to do that when you retire from your medical practice. Keep you out of the pool hall. ;-)
Very interesting discussion on Lisbeth's violent tactics, private revenge and institutional failure to protect. And everybody's right! The institutional failures make Lisbeth's actions regrettable but easily understandable and excusable. And the book appeals to that primal, visceral response we all have when we ourselves or someone we care about is threatened. Civilized behavior is like a cloak we wear over our more elemental...
Maine, It's funny you brought up EDGAR SAWTELLE because I also drew a connection to it and FIRE; the storm in the beginning on the beach reminded me of that Shakespearean tempest. Ginny
Weird, Maine Colonial, not bad. And I don't like Hawaaian pizza, either! I loved TATTOO. Read it with hardly a bookmark. Sent a copy to a friend for his birthday-- he thought Salander was weird, too. Best book I've read this year though! As I've mentioned on the threads, I like white collar crime. Art theft, antique mysteries, cold cases, disappearing heiresses and libel suits. The libel suit at the beginning of TATTOO hooked...
