is in working order we can use a linux live cd to backup the data. This would allow us to format and reinstall system back to factory settings.

Great then we can proceed. Now I must correct a previous post somewhat. There is no repair option in Vista but there is a in place upgrade option which will do much of the same as the XP upgrade option. I don't need the reg key. that is private info. As long as the type on the sticker matches the disk you have then you are ready to go. At this point it is a format and fresh install time. The steps should be about the same as XP so I am going to include those. Go HERE for step by step instructions on how to partition, format, and install XP fresh...

Without the cd there is no way to repair or format. The cd is the important part. Can you borrow a cd of the same type that is installed on the system? Vista Home Edition in your case.

no i dont know anyone with a vista basic cd
