Thread: swap question.

Started 1 month, 4 weeks ago by sleddog0303
I would like to take the 4.0 out of my '92 and install it in my '87 that has a 2.9 in it. Do the wiring harnesses transfer over without too much splicing. And are the motor mounts the same. Also will i have to do anything to the driveshaft. Thanx for your help. steve

You need to replace the 2.9 engine harness with the 4.0 harness and computer. Then splice it in with the body harness for the proper power and such. I did the swap using a haynes and chiltons manual for the wiring diagrams. Your driveshaft length is fine but the tranny will not live behind a 4.0, you're lucky since you have an automatic that both the 4.0 5 speed and auto are the same length as ...

There is no real splicing, per se. The 4.0 engine harnesses wil plug into your dash harness. When I did my 4.0 swap, the only issue I had was the connection leading to the fuel pump and the rear end. I had to repin the harnesses to get hte proper connection. However, its possible that in a 92, the pinning will be correct and you wont have to worry about that.

If it's a 4x4 it doesn't matter..
