If the login screen that you see is a textual login screen, then there is nothing echoed back to you when you enter the root password. Please try again and make sure that the " Caps Lock " is not on.

As Alan already told you, the system doesn't show the characters that you type at the Password: prompt. This is done intentionally for security purposes. Just type the root password that you defined during install and press Enter.
