If you do a search on DR1.com forums you will find a lot of information on this topic. If you are not use to driving in a country like the Dominican Republic I would say no - the hassle and potential problems mean it is just not worth it.

hey! what do you mean with hassle? we`ve been to Cuba and tried renting there, but with a local-guy driving, I`ve tried myself also. are the roads the same or worse? and the police? do they stop you just to get some money? thanks, B.

"we`ve been to Cuba and tried renting there, but with a local-guy driving, " - good idea find a taxi. Roads have probably more traffic. the police? do they stop you just to get some money? - it has been known to happen.

It may be a little more hassle driving in DR. We used to see a tree trunk sticking out of a manhole without a cover in Santo Domingo. I have never seen a police shaking down anyone. You'll be fine. Just so you know renting a car is still not popular. I don't know if the agent still goes over the car with a fine tooth comb in your presence (purposely) before handing you the key just to ...

I traveled to the DR a few years ago with a girlfriend and I would not recommend renting a car. I really enjoyed my stay there but it seemed to be more of a place to hang out at a resort rather than travel around on your own.

I'll chime in to agree-- unless you're feeling confident and lucky, may be best to avoid renting a car. My girlfriend and I traveled to the DR a few years back and the car was the main source of all our issues on the island. We got 'pulled over' outside of Santo Domingo by someone claiming to be a cop (on the back of a motor bike driven by someone not in uniform) for running a non-existent ...

hey! thanks for all advice! in the end then, it`s better we stick to public service!

I think you'll find the public transportation one of the best and most efficient systems in the Caribbean or Latin America. Between the deluxe motor coaches, smaller gua-gua buses, and público vans - where they set world records for how many people they can pack in, you can get anywhere anytime provided you keep your transit to daylight hours. Have a fantastic trip!
