  First, make sure you have AutoCorrect turned on. Go to Office button > Word Options > Proofing > AutoCorrect Options and check the box for "Replace text as you type". If that's unchecked, the =rand() is turned off too. Then make sure you're typing =rand() at the first character of a new paragraph and pressing Enter immediately after the closing parenthesis.
