Thread: question about flaring stainless steel brake lines..
Started 2 months, 1 week ago by GONE N SIXTY
I posted this in the brake and suspension section, but i need help...I`m trying to install my proportional valve but i`m having problems flaring my stainless steel brake line..I just bought a flare kit from Jegs but still its not flaring...anybody have any tips or tricks to get it to work? the flare tool just keep pushing the line down in the holder..thanks
I don't know if you have already tried but put the center of the flare tool in a vice and crank down on it. The bolts at the end are not enough and you'll see a bow in the middle of the bars. If you can't bring to a vice, try vice grips to get more clamping in the center. If still no good try a hydraulic flare tool, much better and will grip no problem but expensive.
Stainless is harder to flare than regular line. Did you tighten the holding tool as tight as you can get it? Also I would get the line tight in the fixture, then put the flaring tool on and slowly tighten down on it, then back off a little then tighten it down again (repeat as necessary).

if your using a cheap flaring tool you have to kind of work the flare.
first thing, since your working stainless lines it doesnt have to be a double flare. Stainless is strong enough to hold itself, and usually wont give you a nice double flare. As the purpose of the double flare is to help keep mild steel tubing from splitting.
Clean the end to be flared really well, make sure its ...

You're a 1/16 of a turn from striping the fittings. I removed the stainless lines and installed the generic mild steel lines. No more leaks. Billy T. gnxtc2@aol.com How...

If you get one spend the money and get it from Snap on, Matco, or one of the tool trucks. Yes it's pricey but they hold up and work. Mine cost me a little over $120 from the local Matco dealer and that was after we haggled over it. As far as the one Rich has...
