Thread: problem with redbud tree

Started 2 months ago by katkat
I planted a redbud tree about three years ago. The tree seemed to do ok for the first two summers but this summer I noticed that the leaves never got the size that they should be. The tree seemed to be struggling to survive. They also seemed kind of wilty, even after a rain or watering. I was afraid maybe it was planted too deep so I scraped off some of the soil. How can I tell if it is planted ...

Gently pull away some soil from around the base of the trunck and check where the root flare is. It should be at soil level or just below, maybe an 1" or so. Here is a link that might be useful: Good Visual

Wow, did I butcher that post... Let me rephrase, the root flare can be anywhere between 1/2 below or 1/2" above the soil line...with the soil line being ideal.

thanks, I will check tomorrow. As I said I think it might have been planted too deep and I pulled back at least an inch of dirt. Should I put mulch on it now?
