Thread: new vehicle - what dealer discounts/freebies are realistic?
Started 2 months, 1 week ago by bliew
Hi,
After several years of putting it off, my wife and I are finally breaking down and are going to get a new vehicle. We are leaning heavily towards the Hyundai Sante Fe in Montreal with a 60-month 0.9% financing for a number of reasons. Unfortunately, Canadian dealers don't have nearly the same deals, incentives or even warranty as in the US, but given it's been so long since I've bought a...

I bought a base model 2009 Santa Fe 3 weeks ago in Ottawa. I paid $20,260.00 including taxes/freight/PDI/etc. This includes a $4500 trade-in of my existing car. You could probably do better, I didn't haggle all that much.

Agree with the others about CarCostCanada....I just bought a new Jeep Wrangler, and it saved me over $1000 over my best negotiated cost I worked out before I signed up....with a CAA membership, it only costs $30 to join. Best part was the dealer that gave me the CarCostCanada deal gave me the price OVER THE PHONE before I even went there....dealers I went to in person would not negotiate me a ...
+1 for Carcost Canada. I used it for my 09 Tacoma and my father in law used it for his 09 Chev minivan. Im sure I got a better deal because of it, and the peice of mind knowing I had gotten the best deal was well worth the $30. The dealers were not very happy with my opening and final offer. I walked out of one dealership and started on a second after he told me there was no way he could sell...
Great, thanks everyone, I'll have a look... The Sante Fe comes pretty well equipped, especially the model we're looking at, and the pricing is very competitive especially with 0.9% so I'm not expecting miracles. But if I can get some free winter tires, at least it will feel like a win...
Turns out I have a colleague who's also looking, so will also experiment with seeing if there's any ...

See if they will spring to have them mounted on rims! Makes life way easier and dealers get rims ridiculously cheap compared to you.

Just wanted to give an update, those CarCostCanada reports really helped. My wife and I went in fully informed, the sales rep was quite surprised we knew those numbers and was a bit skeptical until she confirmed with her manager they were correct.
After that, we ended up with two dealers in a bidding war, each trying to outdo each other, so I think we ended up saving money off the original ...
Absolutely, that's what we used as our guideline, and the sales rep was quite surprised that we negotiated based on their accurate cost. At first she thought we were wrong, but then confirmed our numbers with the manager, then the owner. We figure the dealer made between $400-500 on the vehicle purchase itself, then some additional profit on the extended warranty and replacement value.
So we have done the deal and are new owners of 2009 Santa Fe Limited - Thanks for all the tips - $4,800 discount (thank Johnny Canuck)and we got the colour we wanted (willow-grey), i-pod cable (thanks bliew!), rubber mats, 0% financing and running board. I think reasonable and of course think like all frugal people that maybe could have done better but I am okay. Hope the car works out well.

Dealers make money on holdback as well. If I recall it correctly, holdback is a charge from the manufacturer that covers debt servicing on inventory (dealership inventory is usually financed from the manufacturer). The quicker the dealer moves the car, the less those charges are and that money is paid to the dealer. Holdback is included in the "dealer's invoice" as part of the wholesale cost. There is often movement rate...
