hey guys, been looking around the site, and i must say, thumbs up! i am
just getting into the sportbike world, and im buying my first bike on
monday. im going to pick up a 2002 yamaha r6 as my starter bike. i was
wondering though, i just looked at an 01 r6 today, and as it was running, i
started to smell some antifreeze. he assured me that this was normal on the
r6, and to ask anyone that rides ...
Smelling anything but exhuast fumes would be abnormal... that guy is full
of crap... what's he asking for the bike??
BTW, do you have your license yet, ie. do you know how to ride?
Get the one that doesn't leak antifreeze.
And take an MSF course if you haven't already. An R6 is a LOT of bike for a
n00b and motorcycles are not as intuitive as you'd think.

Welcome to the site! Smelling antifreeze is not normal at all. The R6 is
alot of bike and performs very well in the hands of a skilled or veteran
rider. If your smart I would recommend investing in safety gear it well
save your life & motorcycle safety course. You have a huge learning curve
on the R6 and as long as you think smart with your head and control your
emotions & testosterone you'll be ...
EX250 Ninja, EX500 Ninja, GS500 Suzuki, FZR400, 500 Interceptor....all
great bikes that can be found used and relatively cheap...buy one and ride
the piss out of it for a year then start looking at "BIGGER" bikes.
Personaly a naked GS500 would be the perfect bike to learn on in my
opinion. No plastic, bulletproof engine, light weight, semi-sporting riding
position, tons of after-market stuff.
...
Roadsofa, I partly agree with what you are saying, however, didn't you just recently ask about modulating the throttle of a 1k gixxer?? Obvioulsy you feel the need to tame the beast, so say a 1k isn't a bad bike for a noob, when even you (a seasoned rider) wants to tame the throttle??
Laydlow, Congrats!! 'Hope it treats you well. I know you'll love the handling. As I mentioned, if I wasn't ruined for torque, I'd prefer the agility of the middleweight, which most concede can't be equalled in handling. 'Wish you many decades of fun.
Well it's raining now with snow on the way....I love Kansas!! I was looking into attending one of the CLASS schools, I think that's what it was. There aren't a lot of options around here, but it seems like they had one session at Heartland Park in Topeka. I just think it's great knowledge and a great chance to improve the abilities. I attended the SMART course when I bought my cruiser because it had been a few years and it...
i didnt buy the one that you could smell antifreeze lol... thats why i asked about it, because it didnt seem normal. but ya i am extremely happy with this bike so far, and i cant wait to take the saftey course next weekend!!
I wouldn't take any helmet that is used. Never know what they have done to it or what was in their hair. Would also suggest going to the track after taking the MSF class. You will learn alot from novice track days and it is alot safer!
If your coming off a cruiser and have ridden a year or two then I think an R6 would be ok for a first sportbike. Also check out the SV650. Great bikes to start on and you shouldn't get bored with it for a year or two, if ever. They are also easy to find used and normally not terribly expensive, and have a huge aftermarket.
