Thread: movie "This is England"

Started 2 months, 4 weeks ago by KaliBaby
saw this a few days ago with one of my new uni buddies. thought it was interesting but a less extreme version of American History X. I kept imagining all the ignorant racist rants in the movie taking place in so many other different situations and time periods. for example, I pictured some South Westerners in the U.S. spinning the same bullshit about Mexican immigrants and the like. for ...

I used to 'be' a skinhead when I was younger, though early nineties more than the 80's. I thought the film's pretty realistic, but the culture still remains today, hopefully at least slightly diluted, but I know most of the folk I knew when I was younger are still doing the same stuff, with the same attitudes etc. I liked the music but the politics was bullshit. One time I was on acid and a ...

Strange, I just saw the film. I was a kid during the 80s, and lived in a little village so didn't get much of the culture. I remember the media being very one dimensional - punks were all uncontrollable morons desperate for violence. I met more real punks as I got older and think the film was pretty reasonable portrayal. I especially liked the way the characters worked, Combo was using...

I liked the film although I thought it was a little predictable. Interesting you mention American History X, I really liked that, so intense and well acted. I guess I like 'edgy' films. I was only 7 by the end of the eighties so I can't really remember what it was like. I don't suppose it was all that different to now. There's still quite a few violent/racist/jerks around these ...

Stuff I remember from the 80s... Evil Thatcher getting voted in for a third time and the people of the north being shocked and devastated. Massive, massive unemployment, combined by a growing hysteria about people on the dole (result = collective confusion and guilt) The 'Blue Peter' garden being trashed by vandals. 'Wall St' yuppies in braces, who bought the first ...

Oh, and Giant Hogweed. Giant Hogweed was the most scary thing about the 80s. Even more terrifying than playing on level crossings or not 'saying no to strangers who offer sweets'. I still worry about Giant Hogweed.

I only remember the late 80s as I was very young. I was too young to know about skinheads. The Spectrum 48k was the single most important thing in my life at the time. I remember having a BBC in primary school with those massive 5inch floppy disks. Other stuff: Grange Hill The A Team, The Dukes of Hazzard ET, Back to the Future, Ghostbusters Liverpool FC being unbeatable ...

Back to the original topic, I don't think the film lived up to the hype myself. Meadows' best film in my opinion is Dead Man's Shoes. You should definitely check this out Kali if you've not seen it already, it really is excellent.

Fantastic! I just wore a t-shirt that said 'Sod the poll tax'. I wanted to go to the big demo in Trafalgar Square, but at 16 was about a year too young. In Liverpool, there was over 50% non-payment, and not much less in many other areas. The courts were so clogged up it became unworkable. No wonder so many Tories gave her the boot at the end!

The Poll tax was introduced to ensure that local government tax was unaffordable in poor areas. The idea was that voters would blame the local government and vote them out and the conservatives in. A civil service consultation was held by the conservatives first about the various different ways of taxing for local government. They concluded that all ways had their good and bad points, but the poll tax was a really poor way, and was...

> Konstantin wrote: KaliBaby wrote: that is just terrible! was high unemployment the main reason people disliked Margaret Thatcher? Partly. She was seen as abandoning anyone with disadvantages. Hospitals were closed to cut costs, benefits were cut, they closed coal mines but paid more to import coal, mental health care was cut and ill people were left to become homeless. Some people were unsafe to be out, and there were a lot of cases of...

> Not seen the film, but I was 17 when the '80s started, so here's a few memories. As I was approaching school leaving age, we were continually reminded that unemployment was nearing 1 million. In the run up to the '79 general election, the conservatives put up billboard posters with a picture of a dole queue stretching off in to the distance and the words "Labour isn't working", a pun on the then...
