what model of toshiba is it? and I would suggest updating the graphics driver. Also, have the monitor hooked up and powered on, then power the laptop on and start pressing the F12 key. It should auto switch the display to the external, does the monitor work that way? Pressing the F12 key just gets it to a boot menu, gives the monitor time to see the signal and display it, before the ...

Also, since I left the first post question I have found out more information. While the monitor[viewsonic] is present in system hardware when i look at the serial port there id nothing there. Also, in one of my utilities there is a notation that serioal port has been disabled and stopped. I tried to enable it and restart it and it won't let me do either. It wont' let me reinstall driver ...

The Serial port is not the same as the VGA port the monitor hooks up to, do you have a Serial Port most laptops do not these days.

katiebarrington replied 1 month, 2 weeks ago
from what i have read i think it is a vga--15 pins. fits from monitor into laptop. so i guess I don't need to worry about the serial driver. what do i need for the monitor to work? driver and system hardware wise? thx

Hi tried the f12 and didn't work= but thanks--any more ideas?

Try FN + F5 to switch to the monitor.

katiebarrington replied 1 month, 2 weeks ago
tried that several times--no effect at all

Test the port with a different monitor to see if there is output from the port.

i dont' have any way to do that I did however test the monitor with a different laptop. It came right up on the other laptop. I tried to update the graphics driver but get the message that can't find one newer than one I have. It is intel 915 if I remember correctly. thanks for you help. I am really stuck.

S-video port is directly on the motherboard. Some monitors and projectors have a S-video port, but most monitors don't. When it comes to external monitors using the VGA port, theres not alot of testing that can be done. Only 100% way to tell from hardware or software problem is to have a fresh copy of windows installed and an updated video driver or if the monitor works right when you power the computer on. Then of course update the...
