Thread: mma training and bodybuilding too much?

Started 2 years, 2 months ago by Maximum
Now that I've converted to "mma" workouts, I long for the days of bodybuilding style workouts. I'm not naturally strong nor big nor shredded- I have to work for everything I got. Bodybuilding and mma workouts have different agendas. One is to gain as much quality mass and shape while the other strives to get you in better fighting shape with emphasis on stamina, and explosiveness. Rest and ...

I have done a lot of body studies. And being a martial artist myself I just have to agree with all those who talk about bulking down, but strengthening. When I have drawn from the Olympics and from life models the emphasis for fighters is always long muscle. Check out BRUCE LEE. Yeah all in caps... I did it.

Just do some BJJ gor 6-10 hours a week and yoru question will be answered. My body gets torn up. Healing time is necessary. If you dont heal, your next week of class is gonna be more difficult, and you will get torn up more and are more prone to injuries.

I got burnt out lifting and doing BJJ. I don't lift anymore and I honestly don't feel like I lost much on the mat if any. Now I spend more time on the mat with some boxing mixed in there.

I had quit lifting and lost too much strength. I just started up again recently. I've just been doing full body 2 sets per each part high reps once a week. I'll add 2 a week when I adjust.

I am far from atheletic but my routine has been working fine for me so far... I do Boxing and MMA Mon, Wed, Fri 6:30 - 9pm Tues, Thus, Sat i do HST Full body workouts. I don't really get sore anymore except in the neck area from BJJ but i am about to hit my 5-rep max for HST, but so far i haven't really felt burnt out. I'm thinking about switching to the 5x5 and using those compound ...

I have to tell you I have been training strict MMA for 2 1/2 years and I still have managed to put on muscle. I actually got up to 225lbs and then came down to 205lbs for my NAGA tourney (I was about 200lbs before MMA). Its totally do-able. I train MMA 3-4 days a week and have a boxing coach for the 5th day. I usually lift weights a minimum of 3 days per week and sneak in a 4th if I am feeling up to it. A good bodybuilding workout does not...

When you do lift don't go to failure ever. That would completely be an overkill. I would personally do, like you guys have said, some powerlifting type weight workouts. But I would also incorperate olympic lifting aspects into it. Do a lot of explosive movements, because that could carry into MMA. And also maybe throw in some supersets at the end of your workouts. Like pull ups with dips for example. Good luck in whatever you do bro.

I don't like Baroni, the man, at all...but I don't know if I would call him a complete embarrassment. I mean the guy is a professional fighter and you're not (nor am I). Anyways - I was all about keeping my 5x5 routine when I started getting serious about MMA. That got sidelined real quick. Now all I do is lift twice a week in an upper/lower body split. And there are times when I wish I didn't lift at all...but I enjoy it,...

Is attending BT/BJJ 2x and lifting 3x a week considered over-active? Other day I seeing how much calories I should intake and I was wondering if I deserved to click on "extremely active." Oh and sorry for hijacking the thread.
