Thread: making conductive paint??

Started 1 month, 3 weeks ago by stratotak
Conductive paint is pretty costly in large amounts..Has anybody made there own ??I was reading article on making conductive glue. By using graphite powder mixed in with liquid tape... http://www.instructables.com/id/S55Z9FLF3KMNVQ8/ Wonder if it would work If use mixed it in with paint or primer. Maybe a little can of latex paint..then...

**Krylon Magnetic paint for shielding guitar interiors. $7 isnt exactly expensive. A case is around 35$. Way better that that foil you were dorking around with. http://www.idealtruevalue.com/servlet/the-68812/De tail

Will that stuff work for shielding??I thought it needed some sort of conductive metal in the paint..Like copper,nickle,etc...

AFAIK for something to have enough ferrous content to be magnetic, it'll be conductive.

customtele replied 1 month, 3 weeks ago
The Krylon mag paint has a high iron content, It's designed to make things magnetic so refrigerator magnets & the like will stick to it. I just ordered some from a local hardware dealer. One can should do a buttload of instruments.

WRG mentioned screwing into the cavity & wrapping a wire around the screw BEFORE putting on the paint Then I guess you'd run the other end to your ground source. Thie would give you the contact you need.

ndog replied 1 month, 3 weeks ago
The problem might still exist, even if you could make a conductive contact point the particles are insulated from each other by being encapsulated in the paint. Statistically you might get a conductive path with millions of particles but I don't know for sure. There are plenty of sources of conductive paint, ink and epoxy but they all seem a little pricey. Now don't beat me up, I'm only...

Single coil pickups like in a strat or also p90's will hum at the B double flat of 60 cycles. The idea is to shield the cavity to prevent the humming. I still say someone must have shielded my girlfriend.

Best price I found is on Ebay. Around 15 bucks shipped. I posted the link on this thread earlier. It's a water based paint which makes me wonder if graphite powder and latex paint may work. I'n thinking mix in the graphite & make a thick paste. Then add just enough water to make it brushable. seems like I should get a small amount of resistance from shielding paint. Maybe I should mix this stuff up, brush some on a scrap and...

That would make the shielding at the same potential as the transmitter but there would be no ground connection. This would support the theory that a Faraday cage doesn't need to be grounded. Does anyone know if there is more 60Hz pickup in a wireless setup?

Thank you for the explanation. Also thanks for the heads up about the " If you were able to see how many radio waves that pass through the body every second it would blind you" Not only do I need a tinfoil hat, but I need it grounded.

The same way any other amp is grounded. The transmitter has a small preamp inside and its grounded to the interior of the guitar like any other amp is.

It never worked for me. The iron particles are just isolated by their suspension(paint), so they never really touch each other to make a contact. I can stick a magnet to my guitar now. That works well.
