Thread: low range malfunction

Started 3 months, 2 weeks ago by myggen
Hi. I just purchased an `87 patrol MQ160. And it`s my first 4 wd ever. I can`t get the transfer in low range4wd. When i pull the shift lever it only shifts into normal high ratio 4wd. Can`t pull the shift lever any further. I have tried "helping" the shift arm on the transfercase from underneath, with a tireiron/crowbar, but still the same. Anyone`s got an idea...? Thanks

there is a little pin that hold s the transfer lever on in place, If this is loose or has moved it jams and does not let the shifter rotate enough to go in to low range. Sometimes it can happen when in low range and you can't get it out of low range no that is a pain just ask me.

Have you tried holding pressure on the transfer lever (To change from High 4 to Low 4) whilst slowly letting the clutch out with gear lever in first?.....Simple and probly the first thing that you have tried, but most times it's the simplest of things, which is always the last thing you try......or is that just me

Thank`s for replying to my problem. I have studied some exploded drawings of the transfer, and come to the conclution that it`s proberly the interlock pin as mentioned by " Wish I had coils" that`s stuck. I`ll get on it this comming Sunday. Yes I have tried all my best easing/muscleing it into low in all ways possible, but no luck. I shall return next week, hopefully a lot wiser, and with "...

Now it`s fixed after 7 hours of hard dirty work. Not smart to go offroading the day before the repair is scheduled, when there is no posibility of washing the truck Pulled the transfer apart today. And yes, the interlock, shiftaxle was all messed up with years of corrosion of the steel/aluminium. So some grinding and sanding on the axle and housing did wonders. Now all I need is to modificate ...

Ser godt ud! Even the indicator got pulled out Hey are those tyres legal in Denmark? /Martin

myggen replied 3 months, 1 week ago
(Det var sku da dansk du skrev, Seehuusen..????) Yes the indicator went of in the "battel of the cornfield".. The tires are street legal in Denmark. But it is not legal to increase the outer diameter of the original tires by more than 5%, so if you look at it that way then it`s not legal. But who cares...I don`t

It`s not strict in Sweden. More strict in Denmark. We go to inspection every 2 year. Used to be a statecontrolled inspection, but no it`s private, but the written rules are still the same. But they are much more friendly now, if you get my drift

ah ok, yeah I thought that there might be something about that, they were SUPER strict when I lived in Sweden, but there you have to take the car to a government controlled check once a year, which makes it harder. Here in Oz and Denmark it's only to a mechanic with a "certificate" I believe Yeah mate, I'm originally from Denmark, great to see that the mighty patrol exists even there I could think of a few REALLY...
