Thread: looking for a 22LR to train on. Sig Mosquito good choice?
Started 4 months, 1 week ago by SHU
Hello everybody. My service weapon is a HK P2000 40 S&W. My job has no longer gives out practice rounds and at my last qual my score dropped 30 points. My job is not getting any safer and I cannot afford to go out a buy 40 cal ammo any more. I was thinking about getting a 22LR to practice on and I was wondering what you guys thought about the Sig Mosquito .22LR. I found one on the net for 315 new...
I'd go Ruger MK2/3 or a Walther P22. I absolutely love Sig but I have 2 friends that have both had issues with mosquitos. Does anyone make a .22 conversion for your H&K?
.
The Ruger Mark 2/3's are classics. Can't go wrong with them.
Smith & Wesson used to make a great one too, I can't remember what it was called.
And Browning makes a really good one called the Buckmark also.
.
I have both Ruger MKIII & Walther P22. For simplicity(stripping, cleaning & reassembly) the P22 is the best of the two. For accuracy the Ruger is the best of the two. The Ruger is a bitch strip down and reassemble.
I like my P22, but it's a toy.
Rugers are much better built. The Mosquito's I have handled felt good, but I have not had a chance to work with one. I have heard from several sources that they are not very reliably and can be really picky on ammo.
If I was purchasing another .22 handgun right now I would get a Ruger MkII/III.
If you have a Glock or 1911 there is always an Advantage Arms ...
I was looking at Sig Mosquitos as well. Seems like a good deal, but they come only with ONE magazine, and the mags are $35-$40 each.
I'm going to get a conversion for my Glock instead.
Check how much the mosquito mags are in your area.
I still swear the Ruger MKII Gov Competition is the greatest handgun made by a man. It may not poke big holes, but it pokes them wherever you care to point it

i totally agree on that. They are a PIA to field strip. But, I'm ...
Eh, they're not *that* hard to field strip. You need a small screwdriver or
paper clip, yes, but that's not a tall hurdle. Now, if you take down the
trigger group you're in for a real treat, but I put at least 7k rounds
through mine without a full strip (and who knows how many rounds the
previous owner did) and it was remarkably clean down there.
Nobody makes a conversion kit for my duty weapon unfortunately. I've heard lots of good things about the P22 but the SIG has the most similar size, feel and sights to my duty issue and since the only reason I'm looking to buy a 22 is to get better on my HK, I'm leaning towards the SIG. I've heard the sig works well with CCI mini mags but horrible with everything else. Times like these make me ...
My issued duty pistol is the Sig P229dak. I purchased a Mosquito for $299 about a year ago. I have over 5000 rounds through the gun and have not experienced many malfunctions. I only use CCI mini-mag ammo, as suggested by Sig. I keep it clean and lubed and it has performed as well as any of my other pistols.
Based on my personal experience, I would give it a good recommendation. My only ...

I have a non-threaded TacSol 7.25" fluted barrel on my buckmark and I absolutely love it. I have the stainless camper model, and the old barrel weighs more than the whole gun does now with the TacSol barrel. The barrel isn't cheap, but it's really high quality and was worth every penny.

Another option is a Reloading Rig. It's a big more expensive than a .22 but way cheaper than buying ammo. It also has the benefit of training WITH your duty weapon including the same recoil.
SHU, I won a Sig Mosquito in a shoot match and it was a PITA. I carried Sigs and have owned several. I have had Sig reps tell me NOT to buy a Mosquito. I have 15K rounds thru a used 5.5" S/S 22/45 and that thing will outshoot me any day of the week with the cheapest ammo you can feed it. I too (will) have an issued P2000. I handload .40 JHPs for mine at $.13 each round. Your choice but I would recommend the Ruger 22/45 with Hogue...

VERY true! The original bull barrel that came on the Ruger has never been shot. I pulled it off immediately and put the Tactical Solutions threaded upper on. The upper is the actual firearm on a Ruger. The Tac Sol upper is aluminum with...

Does anyone make a .22 conversion for your H&K? The mark II is a far better gun than a Mark III IMHO. A Mark II would be my first choice as a generial purpose 22 pistol. But the 22/45 might have a grip angle more similar to the OP's service gun ?? Bill
