Hi there, I'll be doing backpacking in Peru and Bolivia in November December: I've already booked my Inca trail, but I was thinking to do also some trekking in the Lares valley, actually my plan was the classic trail from Huaran to Lares as i wanted to see some different countryside and some cultural aspects of the region. Personally I do not recommend to trek on your own through the Peruvian highlands. Even though people are friendly in the area, you will also find muggers which will take advantage of easy targets like tourists. You can also get lost very easily as you will find no signs whatsoever on the many little treks you will find on the mountains. Several cases of foreigners getting...

Thanks Xochitl, I'll see when I'm in Cusco , do you know if I can hire a guide in Cusco o in another town? I'd really would like to avoid to go with a tour and an agency every single trek, I find it a bit frustrating. Thanks for your advise.
