anybody know of a moderately priced ryokan in kyoto?
in the 1980's we stayed at one near the Heian shire but can not remember the name. we do speak some Japanese.

Kyoto-eki kanko annaijo will direct you to the many ryokans around the eki. If you can afford it, I'd recommend the reasonably priced businessman's hotels (they are for men and/or women). Then to be smallish rooms but you only sleep there, i.e., you spend the other 16 hours out of the room touring around. Check out the Lonely Planet's book
on Kyoto. They will most likely have both ryokans ...
In Kyoto there are several choices for ryokan style hotels, I can't remember the one I stayed at, but there all nice! I recommend Tokushima Apartment Hotels if you ever visit Tokushima! Just google it!
