Thread: jb weld on plastic radiator tank

Started 9 months, 2 weeks ago by losttxn4evr
has anyone had any luck using jb weld to patch a crack in a plastic radiator side tank. My 95 sl1 has a small crack in the upper seam of the radiator plastick tank, i know that area gets hot due to steam in the upper levels of the radiator but im looking for a cheap temporary fix that will last around 2 weeks till i get a new radiator. I was thinking about using epoxy but the temprature range ...

Doesn't work. Nothing really does. Go get one from a junkyard. Probably about the same price as the JB weld.

JB Weld IS an epoxy, and no, it isn't gonna work, even temporarily. Your only option here is replacing the radiator. Do NOT try to fix it by adding a stop leak, unless you'd really like to replace the heater core also.

I've used JB Weld on a plastic radiator (not on a Saturn) and it held up quite well. Two years that I knew of. You have to thoroughly clean the surface and keep it clean and then give it some tooth with a 100 grit paper. You should also drill a small hole (tiny hole) at each end of the crack to keep the crack from propagating. Give it 24hrs to cure before you expose it to coolant.

If its a stress crack then it will fail with no warning. The epoxy will not bond to the plastic. The Saturn radiator is a stress crack so, you will have a failure sooner or later. And there will always be the 1 in 1000 chance that it will work. If you are real experienced with plastics and epoxy then you might be the lucky winner. Its a temporary patch at best. http://...

Re: jb weld on plastic radiator tank Replacement with a NEW radiator is the repair with greatest chance of success. IMHO, you are going in the right direction. Given that the radiator cracks start to appear at around the 10 year point (give or take) a pick-and-pull will likely have a significant portion of its life used up. If this is a quick fix to sell/trade the car in the near future, teh current owner may make out OK but the next owner...
