Thread: i5 iMac slow USB hard drive

Started 2 months, 2 weeks ago by trapiee
Hi, i have looked around on some forums mayba someone else is having the same issue: I recently got my i5 iMac and had previously had some WD external USB hard drives. 3.5". The throughput was previously 10-12MB/s on a USB Hub (belkin 7 port self powered). After plugging it directly into the iMac it went up to 18MB/s, this is normal as 4 disks were on the hub. Not quite enough information to know what is happening. When you compare the 27 MB/sec on the Macbook to the 18 MB/sec on the i5 iMac, are there any other USB devices attached to either machine. The transfer rate for USB is going to vary significantly depending on what is transferred and presumably you have nothing else going on at the same time in the background. For example, ...

It is basically the same situation on both machines. I have also tried disconnecting all other USB devices on the iMac on the Macbook only the drive was connected. On the iMac it made no difference what devices were connected only if the drive was behind an USB HUB. In that case it made the drive even slower. In both cases i have tried to copy from the internal hard drive the same ...

This I knew. When buying the drives I knew exactly they would be slower than FW800, but also significantly cheaper (for the same size almost half the price). As I am not cutting films on these drives it does not matter. The only thing that bothers me is that my 1y old 13" macbook is almost 1.5x faster than this new i5 iMac. Which is a shame, because in raw power the iMac should be ...
