QUOTE(mongo_jones @ Jun 15 2008, 10:03 PM) once you're done, can you come fix some of our switches? You must provide beer. And a few beers in, I probably shouldn't be be trusted. I do promise I'm better electrical wiring than I am at croquet.

The wires appear to be wrapped in cloth insulation, which suggests they're very old. Maybe 1940s or early 1950s old. By the 1950s a lot of wire was wrapped in plastic. I'd suggest ripping them out and replacing them with heavier gauge wire. If you'd rather delay that project, you may want to carve away several outlets, and put them on their own, new circuits. The practical result is ...

SLBunge - yikes. To quote Mr. Fly and our house inspector as they wandered around our place prior to the purchase. "Hmmm. Interesting. Wrong, but interesting." (There weren't any "Oh my god what IS that thing"s or "Back away slowly, then RUN"s so we did buy it) (Are those wire connectors called Marrettes® where you are?)

QUOTE(SLBunge @ Jun 16 2008, 09:25 AM) I've never heard Marrettes or Marr connectors. Wire nuts is always what I here. "wire nuts" is the trade name for connectors made by ideal. generic ones are called wire connectors. marr is another brand name. ideal and generics are the most common here in the us. can you tell i once had to have an entire home rewired?...

Any pointers on repairing window screens? There's one tear right at the bottom near the window.

QUOTE(Abbylovi @ Aug 25 2009, 02:25 PM) Nobody asked but...on the advice of my friend who used to work for Janovic, I don't prime when I paint walls. nor does mrs. jones, and she's painted the complete interior walls of both of our houses.

Oh that I don't know. Is it not going to stick to the plaster or something? Why would you prime a new plaster wall?

QUOTE(Blondie @ Aug 25 2009, 12:39 PM) I think the fresh plaster might absorb a ton of paint of it's not primed first. But she likes the drama.

QUOTE(robyn @ Aug 5 2009, 10:52 PM) One word of caution. I am kind of a design nut - and when I did the place we had before our current place (a high rise condo in Miami) - I put in all European plumbing. Very cool looking. Very unreliable. When I had to rip out a wall and a lot of tile to replace a part that failed (after about 4 years) - I said "never again". So when we built this house in 1996 - it was...

QUOTE(SLBunge @ Aug 3 2009, 01:39 PM) QUOTE(Abbylovi @ Aug 3 2009, 11:35 AM) It's become more complicated than I thought. I figured I could walk into Lowes, buy a dishwasher and have them hook it up. But since there's never been a dishwasher in my unit, they'll essentially only drop it off. I'd be installing the washer in a cabinet so I don't know if I need to call a plumber, general...

QUOTE(prasantrin @ Aug 5 2009, 11:03 PM) I love love love my Toto Washlet (all-in-one toilet/bidet/heated toilet seat)! Mine doesn't have a drier or a powerful deodorizer or back and forth massager, but it's definitely one of the things I'll miss most about Japan. My mother loves it, too, but that's because she grew up with bidets and she really misses having one in Canada. Our hotels had the...

QUOTE(mongo_jones @ Jan 23 2009, 01:58 AM) the one thing that the specialist told us that we didn't already know is that the vents are probably fine. this he deduced by listening to the pipes. he also recommended the isopropyl alcohol. eventually i discarded this idea and did what i thought about doing when this first happened but did not do: i gave up on plumbers and called our handyman over to open up the wall, locate...

QUOTE(mongo_jones @ Mar 17 2009, 08:29 AM) re-screening a door is actually easy. i can prove this as i have done it myself. If I tried it, it would for sure make the "What makes you laugh" thread. I am not a "home improvement project" kind of girl. Oh wait, maybe I could make some money taping it and sending it to America's funniest videos!! (Does that show even still...
