As we know the Giants have signed Penny and it appears the Dodgers have picked up Thome and Garland.  Thoughts anyone?  I don't like the Giants getting another arm, their pitching staff is loaded enough as it is.

I didn't realize that Penny or Garland were good this season. I don't think TLR and company will be worried. Both teams are probably worse now or just about the same. The Cards already made their big acquisitions and dramatically improved. I think the other teams are trying to keep pace with the Cardinals. Not the other way around.

Yeah Penny and Garland are nothing more than 4th starters or 5th starters.   In a matchup with Piniero/Smoltz we'd be the favorites still  As for Thome the guy will likely be valuable as a DH if the Dodgers get to the WS....the Dodgers already said he won't get much time at 1B...and Loney is a LH anyway so it's not like Thome is a big benefit.  He's slow, can't play the field and is an average...

yeah Thome even said himself he can't play first unless its an emergency situation. As far as Garland and Penny I agree they are just 4th or 5th starters. But better than what both teams had previously.

I just think it's cool that these teams appear to be worried about getting better than the Cardinals.

Those 2 and 3 run efforts your offense mustered against the Nats won't be enough to hang with the Brewers.  You better find someone who can swing the bat or you're going to be facing a sweep.

Cardinals looking at Tejada

I completely agree with you as would I, but Im not saying that I think we should spend money like its going out of style what Im saying is more than staying competitive its doing what ever it takes to win. If we miss out on Holliday because we couldnt go that extra year or that extra 10 million then so be it we tried. Move on to Bay (which from what I understand is unlikely now) or the next best option. Again your only reading what you want...

I would like to add that when Holliday has been given 600 ab's or been healthy enough to get them he has hit 30+ HR and 100+ RBI. Not to mention he hit way over .300 both those years. I agree hitting behind Pujols will help his stats, but people have to remember thos estats of 30 and 100 were in Colorado.

zuke i am happt wiht penny the years is the problem. other than kip wells DD has re made everything he touched here into gold. thats good ( i might be missing a few) penny is hella talented and instead of aiding his check book in the future why not give him a multi year deal, 2 would have been better than one you are right about bedard he is injured often, so was carp. bedard has nasty stuff when healthy, the cards took a shot on carp years...

Bay to Mets
Published (2009-12-10 20:27:00)
It looks like the Mets are going to get into the thick of things for Jason Bay.  I believe if the Mets do end up signing Bay, Holliday will be heading to Boston.  Do you see any scenario where Boston doesn't end up with Bay or Holliday?

http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20091210&content_id=7792546&vkey=news_stl&fext=.jsp&c_id=stl&partnerId=rss_stl Mo said he will not be used as a loogy or a starter.  He's most likely to make the team as a long reliever.  Personally, I think we have plenty of guys in the minors who could fill that role. This makes me think that Garcia will start the season in AAA.  If Smoltz or another FA...

We have holes to fill

jb, I don't see that there is any great difference between you and I. You add Tejada and Bay. That's more or less what I had in mind. We got Penny since my post. I take another Penny, or someone who can be a starter or reliever just in case Carpenter or Wainwright get injured. I think we would be pretty strong if we can achieve these three things. Actually, if we just get one big bat to replace Holliday, and then we can add a couple...
