I have a 1 year old male mix that has always had stool on the softer side. A few days ago he was straining to poop and managed to get one very hard ball out- he cried. The next day I took him for a good run to get the pipes moving and he managed to get out a few more hard balls. It is now 4 days later and he is still having trouble. My vet said to give my dog plain pumpkin in a can from the grocery store. Mix with food.

I hope that recommendation was after the vet examined the dog. Perhaps your vet will suggest the same after examining your dog. Constipation isn't near as common in dogs and people. Nor is bolting down things and getting blockages common in people. Forget the home remedies until the vet sees your dog.

I have a smaller, older dog who used to get constipated every once in a while. When this happens, I just feed her canned pumpkin. Mineral oil also works wonders.

Definitely go to the vet immediately. Constipation is a very serious medical ailment, and if it isn't treated it can quickly cause irreversible colon damage. He may actually have an obstruction, which can be life threatening. The vet can determine the cause and give him an enema if it's necessary, or send you home with medicine to relieve it.
