hi all, wondering if any of you have heard of this.  i saw a 2nd neuro for my 3yo seizures- i've posted before that there is a discussion whether she is having seizures or strokes.  he wants to do a glucose level curve, where she will drink some glucose on an empty stomach and then they will draw blood at certain time intervals to see that she is absorbing it normally.  he sais that with this ...

HI Alta, I have never heard of basing medication or not on anything like this. I have heard of kids being more prone to seizures when their sugar is low although this is not anything told to me by a doctor, just from other parents experiences. What this doctor wants to do doesn't really make sense to me and I have never heard anything like it. Did you try to google it for info? Kari

Thanks for your post Kari, only thing i found on the internet that matched what he might be saying is that epilepsy that does not respond to drugs sometimes has something to do with the blood-brain barrier and glucose metabolism but that is so not our case. sometimes i think these drs are like the man who only has one tool a hammer and therefore sees all problems as nails.  other than that ...

This sounds like the glucose tolerance test you take when you are pregnant to determine if you have gestational diabetes.  Along those lines, my brother is a juvenile diabetic.  When he was a kid he would have seizures with low blood sugar and we would have to give him glucagon (instant glucose) to get him out of them.  Perhaps he is testing to see if there some similar correlation with your ...

Thanks for your post.  when he mentioned it that's what i thought too but he said he is not looking for diabetes but rather a blood brain connection where although the child is not diabetic she might not be getting enough glucose in her brain.  i don't think i'm going through with it since no one else has heard of this and the other 2 neuro she saw did not suggest it.  ...
