Thread: everything Porcupine Tree

Started 1 year, 4 months ago by Samantha Magistrale
ok, I just recently got into this band thanks to some friends up here on Amazon in the classic rock thread, and I'm wondering on anyone's take on them, best song, album? How did you hear of them, anything regarding the band.....I am going to buy my first PT CD today and am torn over which one to start with. Suggestions welcome!!!! I created a forum for PT so the dedicated fans can "goon" ...

RE: "I just purchased Fear of a Blank Planet and am eagerly awaiting to get it" Probably not a bad choice, knowing your tastes, though I don't own it yet But the two preceding albums show a definite progression towards a heavier and more modern sound While the older ones I have are trippier and more Pink Floyd like In fact, The Sky Moves Sideways reminds me very much of Wish You Were Here

that's my favorite floyd album, so maybe I'll go with sky as my next purchase. I'm going to have to re read the posts in the other thread for randy and d.'s picks.

I still think Deadwing has the broadest appeal, of the four I own But, I did download the song "Fear of a Blank Planet" today, and it could be my favorite yet Looking forward to getting the CD

I checked out the video of that song, and it's crazy...the lyrics on the song too..trips me out. I love it!

Samantha; I have been resisting starting a thread on this topic because I already have so much Porcupine Tree just acquired in the last 2 weeks, when I first heard of them here like you did, and I've had so much to absorb b4 making an informed opinion. I've already been "gooning" about them to a couple long time friends. I am absolutely floored by how incredible this band is, and I can't ...

T. Thank you for your input...I think that Fear and deadwing will be the ones I like alot as i definitly am a fan of headbanging hard edged rock/metal. I won't make my mind up of course after I get those 2 cds. I am going to purchase the other albums before fully making any opinions comments etc..so far what I've heard I've liked.

Samantha, Welcome to your new favorite band. I work at a radio station and I first heard about them when I played them, I've been a rabid fan ever since... I started with Stupid Dream, saw them on thier first US tour, bought Signify and that was it for me... They are light, dark, deep and twisted, and I try and let anyone that I know that likes rock n roll or metal-I just try to ...

Samantha Magistrale replied 1 year, 4 months ago
you're right I do want them all! I am open minded with music and I like alot of hard rock/metal and also proggier stuff...fates warning, yes, dream theater etc...and these guys are just all over the place..

T. McGee, Nice, informative post! Samantha, D. Guymon (he'll be here soon) and I are all new to PT, turned onto them by others on these forums I must say I like The Sky best, and Deadwing better than In Abstenia (Signify I haven't really given a good listen to) But that's still an early impression, subject to change I've yet to order the other five albums, but know I will!

Samantha Way to go!, I was considering starting a Porcupine Tree thread myself because I'm sure other people are starting to get real tired of hearing me goon out over them on the "radio list'' classic rock forum. alexmontrose was going to start a 10 favorite PT songs thread that I've been waiting for, but I'm thinking maybe he forgot about it..who knows...anyway....here are my suggestions...

Robert, Just like you, Zedd and myself tried to tell York, anything from OTSOL and earlier is for hardcore fans only, not a good place for newbies to get their feet wet. Sure, there's some great stuff, but also a lot of experimentation, much of which is easier to appreciate after you've heard the later material. I guess that might be different if I'd gotten into PT back in the day, not less than two years ago

Steve K Re: O.S.I Try youtube to hear songs by them. You might also try their website.....don't know if they have song samples to listen to or not, but it might be worth a shot. Also, look under Office Of Strategic Influence. One more....try playlist.com, they have a few O.S.I tunes.

I don't see why anyone would not like Lazarus with its beautiful melody ~ but perhaps it is TOO goody good for some. Perhaps Shallow ~ though rocking ~ is too SIMPLE for some. It is my least favorite on the album. Halo I find much better ~ sounds like good Jane's Addiction ~ perhaps too HEAVY for some. But the Deadwing song itself ~ now that I don't get? I don't see why anyone would not like it and still like the rest of...

Steve - Elizabethtown is by writer director Cameron Crowe (Fast Times at Ridgemont High/Say Anything/Jerry McGuire/husband of Heart's Nancy Wilson) who began as a teenage writer for Rolling Stone - Thus the lifelong love of music. So you simply MUST see his autobiographical movie "Almost Famous". It is (mostly) based on those early experiences and he became good friends with many of the biggest bands of the 70s and,...
