Thread: distance stakes and hazard markers

Started 2 months, 2 weeks ago by steveban (steveban)
My course marks distances to the centre of the green with coloured stakes. Can these stakes be removed if they hinder my swing or do I have the right to a free drop? - either, neither or both? Also: stakes depicting a hazard. If my ball is not in the hazard and the stake hinders my swing, can I move the stake oor do I have the right to a free drop? - either, neither or both?

Normally you can remove the stakes, including the hazard markers stakes if your ball is not in the hazard.  see rule 24-1 However, courses can make a local rule that prevents you from removing them, it which case they are classed as immoveable obstruction and you can get a freed drop - rule 24-2

thank you

One notable exception to the above. White stakes defining Out of Bounds are Immovable Obstructions and may not e moved. PS This should really have been inthe Rules section.

So, if I'm inbounds and the white stake hinders my backswing I get a free drop, or do I just have to hack my way out of it?

No free drop I'm afraid. Either take a chance or a penalty unplayable. The same is true of a fence or wall defining the OoB.
