http://www.azcentral.com/community/gilbert/article s/2009/11/... Digital photography is gaining momentum as a form of fine art, say members of Gilbert Visual Art League. <snip> Eighteen of the 80 entries are photographs. I've never been much for paintings. What's the point when you can take a photograph instead? Exception being scenes that don't exist, of course (though with ...
My husband is a serious hobbyist photographer. He recently did a portrait of the family cat sitting solemnly on a mantle. He put canvas through his inkjet printer and then added a coating to finish it. Fun! I think there always will be traditional artists, but it is nice that digital photography is gaining respect. Have a nice day!
I've never been much for paintings. What's the point when you can take a photograph instead? I've never been much interested in paintings either, but the argument for representational art seems straightforward. As a work of art, the essence of a photograph is composition. A painting allows you unlimited freedom for composition. The light, the positions, the expressions of your ...
Paintings also offer a level of abstraction that often adds to the aesthetic. Certainly it has its uses in that respect. And I don't begrudge anyone that likes it. Different strokes, and all that. I'm just a philistine, I guess. I never liked paintings that didn't look like photos (I always respected the artist that could do that)**. But then we come to "just take the photo". Of...
I never liked Monet, or Impressionism in general. In mentioning abstraction, I was thinking more of the quality that definitely says "painting" to the eye, even though it's very much a sharp, representational image. Again, I'm thinking of the many, many cover paintings in my book collection, and how most of them would look terrible if they were photographs. Of course, part of that is ...

Rosie Hardy's work ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/rosie_hardy/282231951 4/in/set-7... ) is about as realistic as any Van Gogh. Is it photography or electronic painting? Is it a painting if an artist starts with a blank canvas and creates something using Photoshop or the same artist starts with a photograph and creates something based upon it using oils or modifies it using Photoshop? ...

I have to comment.... I am a digital photographer, but definately appreciate painting as an art form - separate and distinct from the photograph. The artistry in photography is in the subject matter. composition, lighting, and if you must - post processing (which I don't do, but can appreciate it as a SEPARATE part of the art form).
