Thread: dex-cool to green?

Started 1 month, 2 weeks ago by DOUBLE-D
has anyone changed out the dex-cool antifreeze to the old dependable green antifreeze? talking to local shops in our area most recomend doing the change for multiple reasons but I'm not sure there is an avantage. I need to change my upper hose so now would be a good time to do it. any comments or advise welcome.

Completely flush out all of the DEX-COOL before adding the green. They do not mix. It is a good idea to get rid of the DEX-COOL.

Actually, it is a better idea to allow your truck to heat up to operating temperature once a month, than to allow it to be dormant for months on end. Best way to store vehicles. I do plan to change my coolant to green eventually, but mine is a daily driver...

I Removed The Dex-cool And Put In The 50 50 Coolant. The Dex-cool Was Eating Up My Water Pump Gaskets.

DEX-COOL is very corrossive to rubber/silicone gaskets. It also tends to pick up electrolisis currents, which enhances corrosion on the metal parts as well. Unfortunately, GM has too much invested in the stuuf to admit to any problems on a large scale. Putting in the regular green is the way to go. It lasts 3years, 50k miles with no negative side affects.

I did some research a while back and there has been some issues with Dexcool. From what I read was that if the vehicle is operated regularly the heat will kill any baterial growth that can lead to corrosion. On garage queens, bacteria and ...

Feel alot better now... My guy treated the like the Queen she is, flushed the system twice to make sure all the Dex-cool was out and then installed Prestone Extended Life (150,000 miles/ 5 yrs) coolant. If it's good enough for the NHRA it's good enough for me...
