Friends, The Chicago the White Sox (USA baseball team) has a player with the last name Posednik. I can't translate what the name means. Is the root: posedět: then the name might mean "one who sits after"? or posednout: or might it mean "a possessor" or an "owner"? Thanks ahead of time, Dan

the werb "posedět" means "be sitting for some time" Posedíme v hospodě. - We will be sitting at the pub (whole evening for example). I would rather use another werb then sit in english.

DanielZ replied 3 months, 1 week ago
Thanks, Alexx But what is a posedník ? Dan

GlennInFlorida replied 3 months, 1 week ago
Maybe it is someone whose philosophy is "Sometimes I sit and think, sometimes I just sit."

DanielZ wrote: Thanks, Alexx But what is a posedník ? Dan It's not regular Czech word, so we can only guess. "posed" could mean "deer-stand". So posedník could be also person, who builds or uses deer-stands

DanielZ replied 3 months, 1 week ago
Thanks Glenn and eso, I am glad to see others are confused as I am. I like "deer-stand maker." Dan

My guess: posedník (posedlník) from posedlý = obsessed by devil posed (bílý) is a toxic plant, devil's turnip (Bryonia alba) another possibility: posedník = possessor, from Latin possidere In any case, it is derived from the verb seděti (= to sit, Lat. sedere ) Hmm.. Wer was faster (as usual).

bibax, Now that seems to be a very logical conclusion. Thank you, Dan

this phrase gives me troubles.. any takers? here's 2 examples how I found it. 1) Tak uz me to rozcililo, vzal jsem pohrabac, prastil jsem ho pres nej, von vyskocil a dal mi par facek 2) Je to lepší, Maruško, než dát tomu hajzlovi pár facek .

Why is it "pro" and not "na"? _________________ Představivost je důležitější než vědomosti. Mám červenou tužku. Directory of free Czech Learning aids: http://sites.google.com/site/czechdirectory/
